O "Essai Sur La France" de Ernest Robert Curtius é uma excelente introdução à história e cultura francesas. Curtius aborda os mais importantes aspectos que definem a civilização francesa, detendo-se meticulosamente sobre cada um deles. Tendo sido escrito como uma introdução à França para um povo de cultura diferente (no caso, os alemães), o ensaio de Curtius cumpre muito bem a sua função e fornece um panorama da França que vai desde Carlos Magno até o fim do século XIX. Cultura, religião, literatura, as relações entre Paris e a Província, a herança romana da cultura francesa, são as alguns dos temas que aparecem no livro.
