Rate this book
Telekinesis? No problem. Trying to stay alive? Problem. Big problem. It has been sixty-five years since the Genetic War, but the Defects and the Pures are still at odds. The Pure government is on the hunt for the remaining Defects, and no one is safe. With government patrols on the rise in what was once known as Minneapolis, eighteen-year-old Lyla Paxton struggles to find her place in the decrepit world with empty memories about her past. When a visit from a mysterious stranger claims that Lyla is the savior of the Defects, it throws her life into motion. Lyla must leave everything and everyone behind to journey to an unknown place full of unfamiliar faces to prepare for the inevitable war. Lyla's new life is filled with excitement and love, entangled with fear and confusion, and topped off with the unrealistic pressure of trying to remember who she is and where she comes from. Each obstacle pulls Lyla in a different direction, stretching her thin, until she hits her breaking point. Will Lyla save the Defects? Or will she die trying?

Friends! You need to check out this debut book from Kallie Grote!

What an engaging read. I will admit off the bat that this was not my preferred genre. I'm not a dystopian-teen loving reader. It never has been my favorite, but as a teacher, I've muddled my way through many so that I can keep up with what my students have been reading - same with being a parent of teens.

I really enjoyed this book though - the story line moved along well. It was easy to follow, but there were still enough varied twists to keep a reader interested. There were many characters so that the series can build and grow.

The ending was perfect. I hadn't been expecting "that" to happen (I don't want to leave a spoiler for other readers). I had a different prediction for Lyla and Will. In fact I had a different prediction for Lyla's encounter at the Dome altogether. Which, is why I enjoyed the book...

There is plenty to go on for the next book in the series.

Picked this up because it was written by my son's former English teacher. Despite some quibbles with choices in some background details and how certain things are possible (driving across the country with what should be a non-existing infrastructure in a few days). However, I found the story a page-turner and will read the second installment. Definitely a YA novel with people knowing they are with their true love at a very young age, etc.

Also, this is a very black/white storyline. I suspect there are more "normal" humans who sympathize/empathize/ assist the "defects".
