The author does exactly as he describes in the title and takes us carefully through the parables. Each chapter examines the text of the parable, compares how they appear in the gospels if there is more than one version and then discusses the meaning in the setting of Jesus life. The stories are broken up into groups - Confidence in God, The Coming of God's Kingdom, In the Face of Difficulties, Compassion, Generosity, Humility, No Action, Self-Defeating Action, Meaningful Action.

I read this as a supplement to Short Stories by Jesus by Amy Levine and it mostly served its purpose. This author was less anxious to defend the Pharisees, who are often the villains of the gospels, and more anxious to get to what Jesus meant with each story than Ms. Levine. I found some things in the text extremely enlightening and others less so, which is typical of any theological book. The over riding message here is faith and faithfulness to God resembling compassion and generosity more than they do obedience to man made laws. The author exhorts us to lose our religion and reclaim our love of God. I enjoyed it overall but felt the teaching of Sunday School covered the details and exact meanings of the parables a bit better than this book did.
