Reviews
"Loved it! This is one of the best fantasy novels I've read in a long time."
"Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fans will enjoy this story."
"I loved reading this magical novel with my daughter. The mystery of this well-written story kept us on edge as the characters kept our imaginations sparked. This story of talking animals and magic was not only enchanting but the best book of its kind since The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe."
Maya has vivid dreams and believes in magic, while her twin brother Jack loves science. On their thirteenth birthday, magic and science collide, and the twins are taken on a wild adventure into the realm of Maya’s dreams. Along the way, they meet David, an orphan with a fascination for the supernatural. Together, they will form a powerful alliance and might just save not only their world but the world of magic.
The story is told from the points of view of Maya and David. We follow their separate stories until they meet in the strangest of circumstances. What starts off as a contemporary adventure quickly turns into a fantasy adventure, filled with magical creatures such as Hopper the talking monkey, Tommy the turtle girl, Achanak the fire genie, Qidan the snake girl, and the bat-like ekoers. Maya is a worthy heroine, thoughtful, kind, and compassionate. The story itself is full of twists and turns and surprise revelations. I don’t read much in the way of fantasy, but this book strikes me as being highly original. I love the descriptions and details of the Red Gate Center, the birthday cake, the book-shaped door handles, the Fountain of Knowledge … to the extent that I wish there were illustrations. In any event, I would love to see this book turned into a movie. Although this story is complete, the author leaves it open for a sequel or even a series. I can’t wait to read the next installment.
My only suggestion: change the cover to appeal to a wider age range of readers.
I received this book in return for an honest review.
This was my first introduction to the magical world of Maya Mysun and it did not disappoint.
The story bounces along with a lively pace as we are brought into Maya's world on her thirteenth birthday. I don't wish to give too much away and spoil the story's twists and turns, but l enjoyed Maya's adventures as her path crosses with wicked wizards and a magical monkey.
David's character is impressively developed in the opening chapters too. The cocky and confident kid turns out to have vulnerabilities of his own and proves to be an intriguing protagonist as he is brought to the mysterious red gate centre.
In short, it's a great tale for teenagers and adults (who are still young at heart) and if the departure of Harry Potter and Lemony Snickett left a gap in your bookshelf, then I'd recommend the magical adventures of Maya Mysun. It's an impressive debut and I hope we will see more of Maya.
Maya Mysun and the World of Magic takes readers on an exhilarating journey into a realm of enchantment and adventure. Maya, a young dreamer haunted by a mysterious vision, sets off on a perilous quest with her twin brother, Jack. As they flee their home and search for a mystical monk, they discover a world filled with mythical beasts, hidden histories, and age-old prophecies. The author skillfully crafts a vivid and immersive setting, transporting readers into a realm where magic and imagination reign supreme. Maya's bravery and determination shine through as she faces formidable challenges and confronts an ancient evil. With a plot filled with unexpected twists, this YA/MG fantasy captivates from beginning to end, making it a must-read for those seeking a thrilling adventure that will keep them hooked until the last page.
The beginning of an epic fantasy adventure! They may be twins, but their interests are worlds apart: Maya believes in magic and her twin brother Jack believes in science. But, the siblings must work together when, what starts out as a trip to the museum to celebrate their birthdays, soon leads Maya and Jack on an adventure to save their parents. Maya Mysun contains all the elements of fantasy adventure: magical beings that help along the way, evil villains with dark magic and characters who have to use their wits to get out of dangerous situations. A must read for any child who loves fantasy!
Loved it! This is one of the best fantasy novels I've read in a long time.
I am especially impressed with how the author maneuvers you between the 2 realities. Perry uses the emotional aspect of each of the senses, so you feel like you're really there.
The other thing I really like is how original the characters are without being so different you can't relate to them. Add that to the unique plot of the story and you have a real page-turner on your hands.
This Book kept my attention even as an adult and would be a clean read for kids! I loved the science vs magic theme throughout the book as Jack and Maya journey to save their parents. Highly recommend for middle grade and young adult.
We loved the story of Maya, Jack and David. The children all identified with one character or another and found the storyline interesting and exciting. Any book with magic in is popular in this house and this one went down very well. They will now torment me until there is more Maya Mysun.
Maya Mysun and the World of Magic is a thrilling and heartwarming YA/MG fantasy that will capture your imagination from the very first page. With its exciting plot, relatable characters, and a dash of mystery, this book is a must-read for anyone who craves a captivating adventure.
Jack and an orphan called David. They are introduced to the world of magic, or konjurring, and the roles they must play to keep their world and the Konjur world safe from evil plots.
I can’t say that I really enjoyed this book. I felt like there was not enough information given to the reader about what was happening. New characters were continually appearing with no back story. While the story was clever and the main characters were likable, the storyline was confusing.
