The sacrifices that the people of France underwent in order to achieve victory in the First World War have been enshrined in the history of France. This book examines the nature and extent of those sacrifices by using source material of a kind that has so far been little prefectoral records, private correspondence to and from the front, reports from local teachers and interviews with surviving French veterans of the war. The book depicts the war experiences of ordinary people and adds substantially to our knowledge not just of modern French history, but of the 1914-18 war in general.
