"So, this is a science fiction book" you say after the prologue. But within a couple of chapters you've more or less forgotten about the prologue, because JM Thomas wraps you up in an intriguing fantasy universe with a tinge of steampunk. "Well, this is a pretty good fantasy novel," you say before plunging into a page turning, multi-plot-twisting story. But while you are caught up in the "What happens next?!" phase of the book, JM Thomas is dropping subtle hints that indeed, nothing on Sarai is what it seems. JM Thomas sticks the landing with a satisfying ending (note: "satisfying" doesn't mean a happy ending, I'll leave that for you to discover) and enough mystery to leave the reader excited for the next book.
The prose itself is fast-paced. It is lean and urges the reader to keep going.
The characters themselves are interesting. Even when one character is "right" their sanctimony often gets in the way. Or when a character has good intentions, sometimes their own motives block them from forming relationships. No one is perfect, even the tertiary characters. Yet, most of them have redemptive qualities that make you love what they love and hate what you hate (speaking as an empath, empaths beware).
This is more than a good, creative, and well-told story. JM Thomas makes well-paced stops along the way to ask bigger questions with themes about depravity, altruism, and love. I never came away being told what to think.
I'm not a fast reader, but I burned through this book once I really got into it.
This one sucked me in from the first page. The prologue was quickly forgotten as I got lost in the world of Sarai, but it all came rushing back at the end and now I can’t wait to read the next book!
Fans of Graceling, the Sword of Truth series, and Tamora Pierce will enjoy this world that has a splash of sci-Fi thrown in. Excited to see what happens next!
