War's Respite

Rate this book
In 1763, the war with the French came to a close. While most Connecticut colonists breathe in relief, others are faced with unexpected conflicts as battles of a different nature ensue at home.

Veteran Abijah Whitney regrets leaving his pregnant wife behind when he was called away to war. The news of her death during childbirth as well as the ugly brutalities of war have left their mark. His only comfort is the knowledge that his daughter survived. But his plans for her upon his return will cause an uproar in many lives, including the aunt who raised her.
Primrose Allan’s sole consolation after the death of her sister in childbirth is the baby girl who lived. The aunt raises the girl as her own, fearing that one day the girl’s father might return for her. But Primrose never imagined the nightmare that would ensue.

Dr. Isaac Northrup is a friend caught in the middle of the turmoil. Always desiring to bring healing, he feels helpless in the events that cause pain and heartache to others, as well as himself.

Jonas Wooding, the town’s blacksmith, is caught in the strife, made all the worse by a serious epidemic. Bound by constrictions of local law and forced to face his own grief, Jonas’s trust in God is stretched beyond endurance.
When all seems lost, will faith endure?

This novella is the prequel to Cooper's new Revolutionary War series Dawn of America. The setting is Connecticut where battles took place but little has been written about them. The French and Indian War has just ended and Abijah Whitney has just returned home from soldiering. His wife has died during childbirth and his sister-in-law, Primrose, has his 5 year old daughter whom he has never seen. He has been accompanied by his friend, Isaac, who as a doctor served during the War. These characters along with the Jonas Wooding family set the scene for the next books.

I am not usually a novella fan as they are most often unsatisfying with lack of character and plot development. But Cooper does an amazing job of developing the characters and foreshadowing the problems that will develop as they venture on towards the Revolutionary War.

Looking forward to reading the rest of the series to learn more about Connecticut's role in the Revolutionary War.

In 1763 the war with the French is finally in the past. Victory was hard fought and won, but the casualties were more than many could bear both on the fighting fields and on the home front. Illness and the like had taken many and veterans were returning to a quite different world than they had left behind. Were all ready for the struggles that lay ahead?
I received and ARC from the author for my enjoyment. All impressions and opinions are my own.

Elaine Cooper has captured my attention again with her prequel War’s Respite. The setting is after the French and Indian War and the details shared in this free download give reader’s a wonderful sense of what’s to come. Her descriptions take you to the time period and the raw emotions dealt with in this small tale gripped my heart. After reading this free download I ordered the next book in the series Love’s Kindling to discover more about these interesting characters. Elaine has become one of my favorite Colonial era writers.

"War's Respite" introduces engaging characters--of different generations--who need to deal with the aftermath of war and realities of childbirth and illness without modern medicine. I'm thankful the author has written "Love's Kindling" with the same endearing yet complex characters.

War’s Respite by Elaine Cooper

War’s Respite is an intriguing prequel to the new series by Elaine Cooper; set in New Haven, Colony of Connecticut, 1763. Elaine Cooper has a way of writing that pulls the reader into the story she is weaving as she has done in War’s Respite. Emotions run high as war has ended and families are in the process of returning to “normal”. But how can a family return to normal when a loved one is ripped from loving arms on the return of a war veteran? I found myself crying as a young child is taken away from her loving aunt by a father she did not know. A great lead into the next book in the series, Love’s Kindling.

~I was privileged to read ARC of this novella from the author/publisher (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~ I loved it so much I purchased my own copy.
