American Carnage: Tales of Trumpian Dystopia

Rate this book
American Carnage features five writers from the horror/pop culture website Psycho Drive-In, telling original tales of dystopian science fiction and horror in Post-Trumpocalypsian settings. John E. Meredith's " What Kind of Monster Are You?" offers a unique take on a classic science fiction trope: aliens are coming to steal our women! But this time, they've got a distinctly more sinister endgame in mind. Rick Shingler's "The Day the World Turned Day-Glo" is set after a major new technology has effectively made sunlight a commodity. And the only person who can do anything about it is alone on the moon. Dan Lee's "None but the Brave" follows the adventures of a sociopathic anti-terrorist agent in a future where nobody's minds are safe from observation - not even after death. R. Mike Burr's "Where Eagles Dare" is set the day after tomorrow as an unnamed protagonist comes under scrutiny by ill-intentioned patriots. Lastly, Paul Brian McCoy's "Big Takeover" continues the adventures of the protagonists of his novel The Unraveling, as they take a trip into the dreaming mind of the President in order to save him, and the country, from potential apocalypse. These five stories range from straight science fiction to existential horror to trash/schlock splatter. If you're feeling anxiety over the state of the world, these stories might not alleviate that worry, but they will definitely inspire, and disgust, you, all at the same time!

Paul Brian McCoy received his Master's in English from Marshall University in Huntington, WV and then spent the next ten years teaching composition. During that time he has become a prolific columnist and comic book, television, and film critic for Comics Bulletin (www.comicsbulletin.com) - the world's most diverse comics webzine, before launching a sister site, Psycho Drive-In (http://psychodrivein.com), where he is Editor-in-Chief/Publisher.

Upon realizing that his childhood dream of writing comics wasn't going anywhere without collaborators, he decided to strike out on his own and turn his original graphic novel idea into an actual novel, THE UNRAVELING: DAMAGED INCORPORATED BOOK ONE, with more books in that series on the way.

He then self-published a collection of short stories centering on characters and situations in the fictional town of Flannery, WV. The bulk of these stories were part of his Master's creative thesis that have been tinkered with and reworked. New for this collection are an additional five 100 word stories. Whereas THE UNRAVELING was straight horror/sci-fi, COFFEE, SEX, & CREATION has a little bit of everything.

In 2013 he contributed the 1989 chapter in THE AMERICAN COMIC BOOK CHRONICLES: THE 1980S, and began publishing his Comics Bulletin column MONDO MARVEL, which looks at the formation of the Marvel Superhero Universe issue-by-issue, in ebook format. Then he contributed two chapters to DAYTRIPPER: A LIFE EXAMINED, a collection of critical essays digging into the acclaimed graphic novel, Daytripper, before launching PDI Press with the release of MARVEL AT THE MOVIES: 1977 - 1989, MARVEL AT THE MOVIES: FROM IRON MAN TO ULTRON, and SPOILER ALERT: HANNIBAL SEASON ONE - AN UNAUTHORIZED CRITICAL GUIDE.

In 2017 he organized, edited, and contributed a short story to Psycho Drive-In Presents NOIRLATHOTEP: TALES OF LOVECRAFTIAN CRIME and then in January 2018 organized, edited, and contributed a short story to Psycho Drive-In Presents AMERICAN CARNAGE: TALES OF TRUMPIAN DYSTOPIA. As 2018 drew to a close he organized, edited, and contributed a story to Psycho Drive-In Presents NOIRLATHOTEP 2: MORE TALES OF LOVECRAFTIAN CRIME.

He currently lives and works in West Virginia, along with Dr. Girlfriend and their five cats, reading, writing, and drinking the finest beers West Virginia will allow.

Not my style of horror or dystopian, and honestly it still feels way too soon. If you know what I mean. What if these stories were written now? So much more subject matter to work with...

In these very tiring times, there's something refreshing about tales of dystopias that involve this level of sheer gonzo absurdity amidst the horror. As the cause of the horror. Fighting the horror. Really, take your pick.

This is absolutely the best anthology of dystopian science fiction I’ve ever read.
