About the author

Ernst Barlach was a German expressionist sculptor, printmaker and writer. Although he was a supporter of the war in the years leading to World War I, his participation in the war made him change his position, and he is mostly known for his sculptures protesting against the war. This created many conflicts during the rise of the Nazi Party, when most of his works were confiscated as degenerate art.

Ich hatte einige Reserven gegen Barlach als Schriftsteller, weil mir seine Plastiken oft zu bedeutungsschwanger wirken. Aber Ein selbsterzähltes Leben ist das alles gar nicht. Es ist mehr so eine Seelenzustandsbeschreibung, aber mit einem durch Humor angenehm distanzierten Blick. Ein ganz individueller Stil, der Kolloquiales & Expressionistisches sehr geschickt verbindet. (Raabe & Jean Paul scheinen hier Vorbild zu sein.) Die kleinen Porträts von Theodor Däubler und Paul Cassirer sind richtige kleine Prosa-Schmuckstückchen. Warnung: Über seine Auffassungen als Plastiker erfährt man sehr wenig.
