I love baby names books and have more than I am willing to share as I am a bit obsessed with onomastics.

This book really isn't great.

First of all, she makes so many incorrect statements about names. Everyone can have their own opinions on names, sure, but she makes some divisive statements, such as unisex names being used to give girls "stronger" names, which is such a mysogynistic statement, as if feminine names cannot be strong. I could go on, but would rather not as she goes on to misconfigure correctly spelled names and say other things that infuriated me. The low rating on this book speaks for itself, really.

Next, there are so many names missing. The alphabetical list omits so many classics, like Eve, Rosamund, Romy, Rory, Sylvia, Veda, Vera, Zola, Zella, Zelda, etc. These are just a few that I noticed missing, mainly the ones towards the end as the list of missing names was so ridiculously high that I simply could not remember them all. I realize a book doesn't have to include every single name to be a good baby name book, but some of the ridiculous franken-names and egregious misspelled ones she includes over beautiful classics is kind of frustrating.

Finally, some of the definitions are simply incorrect. She is either using erroneous sources or elaborating on and changing some meanings to make a nicer definition for her book. Either option is annoying.

Honestly, there are so many better baby name books at there that this one is not worth wasting time over.

It’s supposed to be the ultimate guide but there’s nothing ultimate about it. Not only is it missing so many good names, it’s pretty Eurocentric and holds little value to anyone who’s looking for a more diverse listing. There are a few diverse names sprinkled in here and there but the collection is not nearly comprehensive enough to be called ultimate. It’s basic at best and makes snap comments like “you don’t want your child to have a name that’s too this or too that”. I’ll decide that, thank you.
