Borders Nationalism And The African State

Rate this book
Larémont (political science, sociology, and Africana studies; State U. of New York at Binghamton) identifies the consolidation of borders, the building of state institutions, and the creation of national consciousness as the essential factors in building stable states and societies. After a brief historical review of state development in Europe and Africa, he considers the three factors in the contexts of Sudan, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone, methodologically relying on public opinion surveys to ascertain mass views regarding borders, the state, and nationalism and then setting that information within a historical analysis. In concluding chapters he considers economic factors of state effectiveness. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
