Rate this book
All of the children out in the neighborhood are having fun. Each child has their unique way to have fun. Join in the fun. The early readers’ books in this 10-book children’s reading series set focus on the skill of learning to read short-vowel words with three phonemes. This book set focuses on single sentences of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, such as cat, hen, and sun. These are the perfect beginning reading words to start with. Reading decodable readers is the 7th step in Mastering Reading. We strongly recommend that your child has a working knowledge of the previous six steps before introducing them to this reading 1. Phonemic Awareness The awareness that words are made up of units of sound. 2. Alphabetic Principle The understanding that sound units are represented by the symbols that we call letters. 3. Phoneme The ability to “blend” or combine sound units (not letters) into words. An example of this would be taking the three distinct and separate sounds of /d/ + /o/ + /g/ and turning them into the word “dog.” 4. Phoneme The ability to take a word and break it up into its sound units. An example of this would be taking the word, “cat” and breaking it up into its three sound units three /c/ + /a/ + /t/. Phoneme segmenting is like spelling, but the sounds of the letters are used rather than letter names. Phoneme segmentation has been proven to be the most effective skill for developing reading success 5. Word Word decoding is what most people call “reading.” Decoding is the child’s ability to use their skill of letter/sound connections and proficiency in recognizing letter patterns to correctly vocalize written words. Words are the building blocks of sentences. If your child is having a difficult time reading words, then your child will have a difficult time reading sentences. Fluent and effortless word reading comes with practice. 6.Reading It is important to give your child gradual steps that are not overwhelming to support their progress in reading mastery. Giving your child lots of practice in reading short phonetic sentences helps them to be successful in reading children’s reading series books and chapter books. Please go to and click on the Reading Mastery tab for supporting materials for these six steps.
