Good read for the early reader such as 1st-2nd grade or a struggling upper grade reader. Very cute story of a little girl that wants to be a pirate like her father, grandfather, and great grandfather but her brother tells she can't because she is a girl. She is on a quest to give her father the best birthday present while her brother blocks her attempts. Eventually she rescues her brother, shows she is the bigger person by forgiving his being mean to her, and shares her quest/present with her brother and end up finding/giving her father the best present ever.

September 16, 2021The Pirate’s Daughter is an interesting novel. It tells the story of a girl, named Melinda, who is searching for the perfect birthday gift for her father. This would not be a hard task except for one thing, her dad is a pirate! She decides to write a poem, and she finds parchment paper to write it on. However, this is no ordinary parchment paper because it is a secret map to the treasure of a very dangerous pirate.
I liked this book. It was easy to comprehend and understand. The setting was nice. I did not like how they would not let Melinda go on the pirate ship prior to the treasure hunt.
I would use this book in my classroom because it is a simple read. I also feel like there are several different activities or lessons that can come from this book. A main lesson that could come from the book is to teach children that we shouldn’t judge others because they don’t fit our perceptual view of how they should behave or what they look like.

Each paperback title in the Race Further with Reading series contains 5 short chapters, color illustrations on every page, and a list of discussion questions in the back. The stories are intended to be a mix of humor and adventure starring kids who save the day or solve a problem. Unfortunately, the plot lines are not particularly interesting, the narrative feels forced, and the sentences are choppy. There are far more superior titles available to students who are transitioning from picture books to chapter books.
