What’s age got to do with it? Meet Billy - the fastest gun in a vest.
Billy is a geriatric slum landlord desperate to win first prize in a Country & Western gunfighting competition. But his trigger-happy birthday celebrations unwisely provoke Cullen, and now Billy must pay. Will he meet his High Noon at the Grand Ole Opry or will he go out with a bang? Whatever happens, there’s sure to be fireworks. Another hilarious episode in the CULLEN & BIG PAUL series of novels and novellas. Each of the books in the series is a standalone story and can be read in any order.
I received a beta copy of this book from the author, and I submit this review honestly and voluntarily.
Even though this novella has only just been published, the author's note at the front of the book places this as Cullen's series 1.5, and don't let the chosen cover mislead you, Cullen hasn't gone to the Wild West, it's the Wild West that's come to him via an American who hopes to make his living locally by way of his establishment the Grand Ole Opry.
The story does touch on a subject that seems to be very close to Cullen's heart and, though not fully revealed in the novella, relates to his prior love/partner. As a result, we see a hidden burning anger and need for isolation in Cullen that we haven't/don't see in Cullen in other books. I believe we will see more of the reason surface in future books.
Overall, another excellent story in the Cullen series. All of them are well worth reading. Hope there's more to come. 4-stars purely because it's only a novella.
Mark Farrer writes very funny books with great characters which are parodies, but still recognisable and quite believable. This story, again featuring the rather enigmatic 'Cullen' who manages to makes sure that his form of justice is served, features lots of clever word play, and some hilarious situations. This all leads to a great novella length easy read, which for me is a very enjoyable contrast to the thriller/action books which I normally read, and provides a lot of laughs. I received an advance copy of this book from the author, but this honest review has been voluntarily written.
As a very new reader of these books, I was surprised how quickly I 'got' them, or bought into the story form. I really did enjoy the dark Scottish humour, so much so I bought all the books and read them one after the other. The characters are human, like most people in the world, not like the books with people who are beautiful, rich or have 'influence' that go around these days. It's simply stories about us and that's why they are so real and enjoyable.
Bronchial Billy is another of Farrer's novellas that take the time to explore the emotional backstories of his novel series central characters - Big Paul and Cullen. In this intermediate tale, we have a glimpse into Cullen's motivations and tortured emotions. Farrer uses the story of Bronchial Billy to help develop the emotional connection the readers have to the mysterious drifter and hero, Cullen.
Highly Recommended. Another very funny book by Mark Farrer. I love the descriptions of the characters and the situations they get themselves into. The description of the problems older man have with the positioning of their belts really made me laugh.
