"There was no cure. There were no more treatments or medications that could help. No way of reversing the years of lung damage, scarring, infection, or inflammation. Both of my lungs were no longer able to adequately provide oxygen to the cells in my body. Carbon dioxide was building up in my bloodstream to a dangerous level. The excessive, forceful coughing was popping holes in my lungs and causing them to deflate. I could no longer live with my lungs. It was time for double lung transplant, the last resort."
 
Born with Cystic Fibrosis, a chronic, progress, life-threatening illness, Kelly was told she would only live to 18 years old. She surpassed the statistic, at age 29, was officially placed on the nation wait list for double lung transplant. Doctors said there was a %1 change of finding a donor match for this life-saving transplant. Kelly's wait for her new lungs was full of hardships and resilience, but through it all, she found her faith and whole new life.

About the author

Kelly was born with Cystic Fibrosis and continues to fight this fatal disease every day. She underwent a double lung transplant in 2017 and faces new challenges with post-transplant life. Kelly has a Masters in Social Work degree and previously worked with end-stage kidney disease patients. Currently, Kelly owns an online toy shop, "Miss Sunshine's Toy Shoppe," and a mobile notary business. Kelly received the “Hero of Hope Award,” which is a national award given to Cystic Fibrosis patients for their strength, courage, positive attitude, diligence in self-care, and a “special spark.” Kelly was also featured on KMOV news television for her miraculous story pre- and post-transplant, and highlighted in a testimonial story at Morning Star Church in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri. She enjoys movies, traveling, being active, and making memories with her family. Kelly lives in Defiance, Missouri with her husband and daughter.

Breathe Deep is a good read showing the struggles of life before and after transplant. Kelly shows her faith in God and people around the country while describing how precious life is.

As someone who works with CF and lung transplant, I like hearing the patients perspective of the process. It reminds us as practitioners of the emotional toll that this disease takes on the person.
