In contrast with other texts in the field, which offer advice based on intuition or opinion, A Guide to Effective Studying and Learning is the first text of its kind to be based on learning research. Covering understanding, innovation, creativity, and collaboration & teamwork, this practical guide introduces readers to the actual science of learning. It uses demonstrations to help students understand how recommended techniques actually work and short format and action lists to show them how to apply the science to their own learning.
I read this for a learning and memory psych course. I would give it a 3.5
I really liked how this book broke down skills that you can use for your own studying and to increase the quality of your own learning. They even utilized those methods in the way the information was delivered - very smart. At times I felt like it was too simple, possibly more for an entry level psych course than an upper division - but that could just be my professors fault - or potentially they just broke down complex information so effortlessly that it made the information feel like it was too easy to digest. Overall a great book with great tips on how to leverage the scientific understanding of the brain to make studying more effective! I would recommend it to anyone even if you aren’t a psych major. If you’re looking for a neuroscience perspective to learning in memory, this is not it. But if you want some tools to make you a better studier, this is great!
