A Christmas for Carol

A modern spin on a beloved Christmas classic. After the passing of her best friend, Jacqueline Marley, Elizabeth Scrooge heads up the powerhouse financial firm of Marley and Scrooge. Bitter and angry, love is the furthest thing from her mind. But then she hires a new employee. Carol Cratchit is looking forward to her new job as the personal secretary to Ms. Scrooge. Despite the simmering sexual tension which heats up between them both, Carol couldn't ever imagine being with someone so cold and heartless. When Scrooge hires Carol to help her with a personal issue outside of work, Carol reluctantly agrees. But with each meeting, Carol begins to see past the hard exterior and sees something inside of Elizabeth that she has been longing for. For a miracle to happen this Christmas, and give the Happily Ever After both need, Elizabeth and Carol have to look into the past, focus on the present, and find the magic they both need for the future.

This is the type of book that makes you think you can write a book like this easily. A Christmas for Carol is faithful to that tradition, where people think they can write Christmas books.

There's mention of a Crachit, a Marley, and a Scrooge. Without giving the plot away, let me say that the final two chapters are very much in the vein of Dicken's original book. I mistakenly believed there would be something supernatural in this book. There is not so.

This book can be qualified as FF Romance. I picked a book like this because I can't stand any other form of bluntness or stupidity in romance books. You know, where one of the heroines does something to alienate the significant other. Reading this tradition in a FF book takes the sting out of it.

This story has a lot of potential, but it needs massive revisions before it can live up to its potential. A sapphic retelling of A Christmas Carol sounded awesome and the description for the book got my hopes high. I surprisingly liked Carol, but she was the only thing I liked about this book.

The majority of this book read like it was written by a high schooler. Everything about the story felt very bland and the dialogue felt unnatural. The dialogue was filled with overly formal language and I was on the verge of laughter from some of the stuff that the characters said because real humans don’t talk like that. Some revisions or possibly an entire rewrite of this story would definitely make this book better.

Something that would’ve improved the story, too, was some sort of signal that marked the point of view changes (like simply putting the character’s name at the start of each chapter to mark who’s perspective we were reading from). I was so confused at the first point of view change. I thought that I’d somehow switched books in the middle of reading because it suddenly went from a grouchy, grieving woman to a younger, happy woman with no warning.

I also think this book was marketed wrong. The women on the cover of this book is supposed to be thirty seven, but she definitely looks much younger than that. The cover design appears to hint that there’s some steamy content and the description of the book even mentions “sexual tension,” but there’s no smut in this book. I personally don’t mind that there wasn’t spice, but the cover and description gives potential readers the wrong idea about this book.

A promising read but...

This is the first book I have read from this author (I think) and overall all I enjoyed it. If you are looking for a holiday book of the usual Christmas Carol then this will not really be up your alley as there are no ghost or dream visits or any of the that stuff. What you will get is a typical Scrooge and a Carol who tries to guide Scrooge back to the light.
Like I said overall a good read. Minor mistakes throughout but nothing too distracting. And the two MC were actually done really well. I was hating Jackie and loving Carol. The story progressed well but what made me take a half a star off was how easy it wrapped up. There was no epiphany that made her want to change her ways...not really. And it was too fast and easy for everything to be solved. I am one for a happy ending which I am thankful for, I jusy wish maybe it took a few more chapters to get there.
Regardless, its free on kindleUnlimited and well worth a read.

This one was a very nice surprise in my Christmas binge reading. It made me laugh, it made me cry. Too many emotions in only 119 pages :)

.

It's an okay read. Could use some editing, and probably a beta reader (the most glaring thing was the main character's nephew changing names from Fred to Tim by the end of the book?). The character development could use some work and it could do with some deeper delving into why Carol even had feelings for an asshole as big as Liz was. Especially since while Liz changed in her behaviour towards Carol most of the time, she was still a monster to everyone else.

Love, love, loved it!

Sad memories are haunting her and she is well on the way to ruining her life and the life of the people around her. An unexpected arrangement is all she needs to change but it will not be achieved easily. A story filled with past, present, hope and love. It perfectly combines the atmosphere, the magic and the true meaning of Christmas. This is an amazing twist of the original Scrooge and a wonderful story for anyone looking for a feel-good romance.

Excellent!

This is a very well written modern lesbian version of the Christmas Scrooge story featuring Elizabeth Scrooge and Carol Cratchit, both well developed characters. What starts as a business deal slowly becomes an affair of the heart. Then the past rears its ugly head and everything comes crashing down. All that is needed is a little Christmas Magic to set things right. Put this book on your must read list.

Cute

A cute story, but badly in need of editing. (Referring to Scrooge as Scruggs for a portion of the book and things like that.) But it is a interesting retelling without the supernatural interventions.

Sold as a reworking of Scrooge undervalues this book in my opinion. Yes it follows the arc but no ghosts just characters doing their best and worse. It made me cry and that is testament to the writing - or glass of wine I had reading the book but hey it is Christmas.

Merry Christmas

Being unaware of when this book was written, I will attest the author could have done a little. Other than that, Jackie is very opposite of Mr. Marley of the Christmas Carol classic. Jackie symbolised love.., not greed.

The story was entertaining.

A short retelling of A Christmas Tale!

An accident on the day before and the other boss takes her tragedy to her employees. A new secretary takes on the task of releasing all that anger or does she fall into the trap? Enjoy!

great take on an old story

I have always loved A Christmas Carol. This is a great take on an old story. Liz hate’s Christmas because her first love died on Christmas Eve. Carol is a breath of fresh air.

Good, quick Christmas read

This was a really good story, and it moved along fast. Not a ton of character development, but certainly enough.
