The author states very early that most works on Mao are either scurrilous or hagiographic. He writes that he’s offering a balanced account. But far from being balanced, this little book is a defense of Maoism. He even eschews Communists like Peng Dehuai, Liu Shaoqi, Wu Han who were critical of Mao’s many ideas. After giving a brief account of Mao’s early life (about until the 1940s), Jack Gray discusses Mao’s views and tries to justify most of them. He defends the Cultural Revolution. But it is not surprising. The book was first published in 1973. Mao was still alive then and his ideas had some appeal to Leftist all around the world.
