The first title in a dark and gritty crime series.

4☆ Gripping, Gritty and Gruesome, A Perfect Start to a New Series!
Retriever of Souls is the first book in a new gripping new series.
The first few pages were gripping and definitely had the shock factor.
There's a serial killer on the lose! And wow is he twisted! He prays on a certain type of prostitute, he believes he has been recruited by God to save their souls by beating them to death in a gruesome ritual. But it's not just that there is so much more to his character. Mummy issues, sexual issues wow!
Detective inspector Paolo is tasked with hunting the killer down. I really liked Paolo he is an endearing character, strong, dedicated, complex but a good leader. Unlike his sexist partner Dave who is a womanizer who has no respect for women. Let's just say I wanted to smack him on several occasions!
Retriever of Souls is a gripping, twisted, gruesome, police procedural, full of juicy twists and turns, potentially suspects that I didn't guess straight away (which is a huge bonus) , it's a pacy read that ramps up suspense. The chapters are nice and short. I loved the snippets from the killers warped mind as you get to delve into his past.
I was a little dubious at reading a thriller with a religious twist, but I'm so so glad I took the risk and read Retriever of Souls, as it's definitely going on my Must Read Series List! I highly recommend it, the perfect start to a thrilling new crime fiction!
Thank you to Rachel Random Resources for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
RETRIEVER OF SOULS is the first of a series that features DI Paola Sterling and DS Dave Johnson. They are called out to investigate the murder of a young woman. She was subsequently identified as a witness in a criminal case. She had been beaten to death, unrecognizable.
The killer is a man that believes prostitutes are the devil's work. He is out to save all their souls ... one way or another. He has visions and the Good Lord praises his work.
As more bodies are found, Sterling and Johnson find themselves with several credible suspects. When the hunt becomes personal, Sterling finds himself involved with a killer that's never been seen before.
This is a well-written crime story with characters that are memorable. I like the relationship between Sterling and Johnson ... a little on the contentious side. Part of this story involves Sterling, his wife from whom he is separated, and his daughter, Katy. Sterling's job has always been a problem, interfering with his family life.
There's a lot of action, a real page turner. Twists and turns are around every corner with an ending that was not only highly suspenseful, but unexpected, as well.
Many thanks to the the author / TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the digital copy of this gritty crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I really enjoyed this first book of the D.I. Paolo Sterling series. The culprit is a serial killer and sexual sadist who has been eluding police. There are also biological twins involved that were separated at birth, and one of them has had a really easy life while the other one not so much. One of them is the killer, but I'm not going to saw which one. There are some very graphic sex and violence scenes in the book so if that is not your cup of tea, I would stay away. If you can deal with it, I think you will really like this new DI Sterling and enjoy this book as much as I did.
Can DI Sterling and his team uncover the truth behind the serial killer, before another prostitute is killed?
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is all about the job, and it has cost him everything, his marriage is over, and his family a ruined state. He's one of the good guys, and can't turn his back on the nefarious goings on in his town. His team are working around the clock to find out who is targeting prostitutes, who is mutilating them and throwing them out with the garbage.
This is a great British crime drama. It has sections narrated by the villain, which are disturbingly gruesome, as he is driven by his religious mania. The plot plays out well, weaving some interesting characters and suspects together. The story has a depth to it, and there is more going on than just the main storyline, but these side plots don't detract overall, it all helps add to make this an enjoyable, intriguing, and very human story.
Paolo's team are great. I enjoyed the relationship with Barbara, and that we'd been introduced in the middle of something complicated. Dave is the newbie on the team, and is a little prick with a big attitude and feeling of self-importance. It was very interesting to see how he evolved throughout the book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and I can't wait to start the next book in the series!
This is the first title in the DI Sterling series and let me tell you I'll definitely be following Paolo in his next cases. Paolo is a great character, he has got depth and a backstory to him that can easily build along the way. There is also a fledgling romantic slant that hopefully will develop. I also adored his relationship with his partner detective sergeant Dave Johnson. (Aren't they just great names Paolo and Dave) Anyway, like I said their relationship is great. Dave, learns a lot from Paolo.
The first chapter of this book we are brought right into the action, and Mace doesn't hold back with the graphic description. As you may have guessed from the title and blurb there are leanings towards religion. The serial killer believes he is saving the victims souls by killing them and putting them on the road to redemption.
We get chapters from the killers perspective, and I found these very hard hitting and at times difficult to digest due to the dark nature of the subject. However, it made for a great story and you can totally understand why the killer is the way they are.
As the reader we are given breadcrumbs of evidence and clues to follow, which often led us up the complete wrong path. Which is what we all love in a crime mystery novel. Here all the main characters have a connection to their younger days in school, and I loved how each one had a similar characteristic to the serial killer. Just to keep us on our toes.
Things get very personal for Paolo during the investigation and the tension ramps up. Definitely a book you won't want to put down until the final page and revelation.
If you like your stories to be gritty and graphic, with a lot of tension and action then make sure you get a copy of this book.
Retriever of Souls by Lorraine Mace is the first book in the D.I. Sterling Series, and follows one troubled cop's investigation into a series of brutal homicides. DI Paolo Sterling is on the case, juggling an estranged wife, a daughter he barely knows anymore, and several old classmates who may or may not be involved in the crimes. Part police-procedural and part whodunit, Retriever of Souls is all thriller. We get our required murder scenes and glimpses into the killer's head, both of which are highly disturbing to say the least, and the rest is Paolo Sterling's dogged pursuit through chains of command, personal crises, and a city teeming with criminals. Even with his life falling apart, this dedicated cop will stop at nothing to catch the culprit. Every story turns on its characters, and Lorraine Mace created two of the best to star in the show. Sterling and the killer couldn't be more different, but they are essentially two sides of the same coin. Both have suffered, both are driven to succeed, and both seek a redemption they will likely never get. And the rest of the cast is just as well-crafted. From the other cops, to the victims, to the criminals plying their trade, to Sterling's own wife and daughter, every character is fully realized, and the interplay between them is spot on. They are genuine people, every bit as messed up as the rest of us. And no spoilers here, but just like in real life, things in Paolo's world don't always go his way. The result is a dark, gritty chase through back alleys and bordellos that can't help but keep the pages turning. Five stars for Retriever of Souls by Lorraine Mace!
This is the first book to feature DI Paolo Sterling and DS Dave Johnson. I think I’ve found my new favourite crime series! Retriever of Souls is gritty, gruesome and sometimes a little disturbing but I just didn’t want to put it down.
Women are showing up, brutally beaten until they are unrecognisable, dumped like rubbish.
Paolo Sterling is a such a compelling and realistic character, even when he was being a grumpy sod, I couldn’t help but like him. He got quite a complicated life outside the police, he’s still in love with his ex wife and can’t move on, even though he’s had a few offers. Paolo’s daughter Katy features quite heavily in the book, who I enjoyed as a character, despite being quite stubborn and refusing to listen to what anyone says.
His partner Dave Johnson on the other hand, annoyed me a little bit with his macho bravado and the occasional sexist comment. His does go on a bit of journey through the book and started to grow on me by the end.
I did sort of guess who the killer was around the half way mark but there were plenty of red herrings and misdirection that had me doubting myself. I also was fascinated by the little insights we got into the deranged killer’s mind and how he justifies killing in his sick mind.
I’d recommend Retriever of Souls to anyone who likes a gritty and grisly police procedural with lifelike and compelling characters. I can’t to get stuck into the next book Children in Chains.
Thank Christ for Lorraine Mace and D. I. Sterling!!
With the world being as it is right now... and with my hayfever making my life a misery... sleeping at night is almost an impossibility.
This is where Lorraine Mace has been keeping me sane.
From the opening pages of this book, you are thrown headfirst into gore, intrigue and shenanigans! I like my crime novels to be pretty graphic, and Lorraine delivers that in shedloads in this book - the first I have read of hers. Throw in some deliciously flawed characters, interesting relationships and you've got a corker right there! Rather than merely concentrate on the main characters, Lorraine takes the time to build the associated "cast" - which many authors fail to do.
I liked trying to guess who the killer was - and of course I got it wrong. But the journey of discovery was superb.
Highly recommended.
I've also started on the second book in the series... and that one looks set to be even better!!
Disclaimer: I did receive a free copy of this book (because I built her website) but at no point did Lorraine ask for a review of any type. I wanted to write one because I think that we all need a little D. I. Sterling in our lives (although to be honest, "Dave" has been more my type in the past).
This is the first in The DI Sterling series from Lorraine Mace. Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is a committed police officer the story follows DI Sterling as he tries to stop a dangerous killer. The killer is a man that believes prostitutes are the devil's work. He is out to save all their souls ... one way or another Women are showing up, brutally beaten until they are unrecognisable, dumped like rubbish.A real page turner highly recommend this book to any one who loves a good thriller.
I was hooked on Retriever of Souls from the opening scene. I’d planned to read only two hours before dinner but got lost in the pages and didn’t move for the next four hours and thirty-nine minutes. Dinner was late that day.
Prostitutes are being murdered, beaten beyond recognition before they’re strangled, and discarded in garbage dumps and trash heaps around the city. All too often, it’s easier and less work to blame sex workers for their plight and little is done to investigate their deaths.
Such is not the case with Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling. He takes every case seriously, immersing himself in the details of the crime. Even more so when he believes the latest body found is connected to Frank Azzopardi, a former high school classmate and local gangster he could not make a case stick against, thanks in part to Azzopardi’s attorney, Matthew Roberts, another former classmate.
However, Paolo’s not one-hundred percent focused on the job. A family tragedy has left him separated from wife Lydia, who has a hard time being civil to her estranged husband.
Did I mention they were high school sweethearts?
The DI’s only joy comes from spending time with his fourteen-year-old daughter, Katie, but she’s in jeopardy of being expelled from her Catholic school, run by Father Gregory… another former classmate of Paolo’s.
These lives will converge as Sterling and his team piece together a bizarre story in their search for the elusive serial killer.
Science, and Medical Examiner Barbara Royston hand the team a major break that will still leave them scratching their heads and running in circles.Trying to repair a friendship ruined by bad judgment, Sterling accepts an invitation to lunch with the Medical Examiner only to find out she wants him to have a talk with the pub owner who’s physically abusing his wife.
Why Paolo? Because he’s a cop… and pub owner Larry is yet another former classmate.
This made me chuckle and every time Paolo because upset or agitated, all I could think was, “Dude, you need to move.”
While I never believed Azzopardi was an innocent, Paolo’s fixation on the mobster doesn’t serve him well. His contempt for Roberts was even worse and led him to pull a one-eighty when he thought the attorney needed compassion.
Paolo is a good solid character. Hopelessly flawed in personal matters, he is a good cop who buries himself in his job when his personal life overwhelms him. Not the best option and could have detrimental repercussions.
Which brings me to Paolo’s wife, Lydia.(Since this post will appear on Mother’s Day in the U.S. I’ll try to be nice.)
I didn’t like her. End of story.
Granted, she suffered a loss no mother should ever have to deal with, and Paolo does not deny losing himself in his job, but her betrayal was so much worse. But she lets herself off the hook by blaming her husband. And he allows it.
The DI is at odds with his Catholic upbringing but I believe a small part of him feels the need to pay penance for his sins.
Which doesn’t make him unlike the serial killer he’s looking for, except the killer is trying to save women (and himself) from committing more sins by sending them back to God.Like any religious fanatic, he’s only doing what God tells him to do… kill.
Sounds crazy right? He isn’t. And DI Sterling takes great satisfaction is telling him so.
Can't understand why people can easily accept madness but not evil.
Good writing and great plot twists come together in this read and deliver a raw, graphic, and smart thriller. The science is explained without being condescending and the theme of religion comes across as a character in the story with no preachy doctrines or judgments.
Except for the killer’s.
This was my first read by this author, but not my last. I’ve already purchased book 2. There were just enough details given during Retriever of Souls to let you know where Children in Chains is heading. And I’m here for that!
From the very first scene, it's clear that Retriever Of Souls isn’t the sort of book which is going to appeal to readers who don’t like reading graphic crime scenes; it’s brutal, explicit and shocking. However, this is a novel about a twisted serial killer who is driven to kill then defile his victims and so although there are sections which are particularly gruesome, these scenes do have a vitally important role as they reveal the very damaged mindset of the murderer. DI Paulo Sterling is the police officer tasked with solving the case and it turns out to be far more personal than he would have expected. He has a particularly fractious relationship with local gangster, Frank Azzopardi and his solicitor, Matthew Roberts. He was at school with them both and it’s clear they have a long and troubled history. Paulo claims he hates Frank because he’s a violent criminal who uses people for his own gains and Matthew for defending Frank, making out he is the victim of injustice despite being fully aware of the sort of man he really is. There is obviously bad blood between them and it’s not surprising that Paulo’s new detective sergeant, Dave Johnson should question whether Paulo’s desire to secure a conviction for Azzopardi has a element of wanting to seek retribution as a result of something that happened when they were boys. With the exception of Paulo, the male characters are not a pleasant group of people. Retriever Of Souls has a slightly anachronistic feel compared to some crime fiction novels - female police officers are still referred to as WPCs and the attitude of many of the men is misogynistic, with more than one character guilty of violence towards women. It’s not just the public who have the dodgy attitudes either, Dave Johnson uses crime scenes to hit on the women also in attendance and describes one of his colleagues with a homophobic slur. However, this is probably a more realistic portrayal of what real life is really like for many people, where politically correct sensibilities are less in evidence. While most of the story is centred on the investigation into who is viciously killing prostitutes, the scenes involving Paulo’s personal life add a fascinating dimension to the story, particularly with regards to his ex-wife, Lydia and teenage daughter, Katy. There are also really disturbing moments which provide an insight into the killer’s activities; they are horrific but also drop hints as to his identity - although the clever red herrings meant I was actually really surprised when the truth is finally revealed. Retriever Of Souls is a fast-paced and engaging crime thriller which kept me guessing throughout. I thought DI Paulo Sterling was a strong protagonist whose tragic past and complicated relationships ensure it will be intriguing to see how his character develops in the future.
Have you met Paolo Sterling? I have and boy does he have a lot on his plate!!! Not only is he hunting seriously nutter of a killer, but he’s got an estranged wife who can’t stand the sight of him and a daughter who adores him but she’s a handful! And this is without mentioning his old school “friends” living on his doorstep.
Despite all this, I really enjoyed Paolo. He’s a tenacious detective whose heart is in the right place but he takes no sh… he knows when to push back.
This case I followed him on is one hell of a ride. There were so many different suspects for me to choose from that I could not settle one. I kept jumping between individuals as the author dropped hints on the pages.
Retriever of Souls is a dark police procedural of a read. I wouldn’t recommend this for anyone who is very religious as there is a heavy theme to the book. However I really enjoyed it and will be returning to Paolo’s patch when I can!
The killer in this novel gets sexual satisfaction from mortally harming prostitutes. A real ‘sicko’, his extremely unhealthy relationship with his mother has marred his life forevermore. He believes that in order to save the souls of certain women (prostitutes), he must kill them so as to return their souls to God. Then wracked with guilt he flagellates himself with a scourge until he passes out.
As he kills more and more women, it is the task of DCI Paolo Sterling and his team to find him and lock him away from society.
Paolo Sterling went to a Catholic school called St. Swithins’. Many of his former schoolmates feature among his potential suspects in this gruesome case.
D.C.I. Paola Sterling – Catholic, estranged from his wife Lydia who he still loves, still mourning the death of his daughter Sarah, trying to find some rapport with his fourteen year old daughter Katy, and gingerly navigating his relationship with Barbara, the police coroner, Paolo finds succor and and escape from his personal life by giving his all to his work.
Detective Sergeant Dave Johnson – New to the team, Dave fancies himself a bit of a ladies man, though the ladies would disagree. Paolo dislikes Dave’s attitude toward women and his work.
MY THOUGHTS
With themes that touch on Freud’s psycho-sexual theories, self-flagellation, necrophilia, spousal abuse, child abuse, and gruesome crimes against women, this novel is not for the faint of heart.
The dark subject matter was only a small percentage of the narrative though. Most of the story dealt with the policeman, Paolo Sterling, and his tumultuous and unhappy personal life. I found myself liking him and look forward to future books in the series.
Despite it’s often dire and disturbing subject matter, it was a page-turner and very well presented. Set in the fictional British city of Bradchester, it displays the seamier side of urban life without naming names and shaming cities.
Unlike many police procedurals, it was a refreshing change to read about a DCI and his sergeant completely at odds with one another instead of the usual sympathetic duo – though I suspect their rocky relationship improves in subsequent novels. DCI Sterling was a protagonist with a LOT of personal baggage including a cold and distant relationship with his estranged wife, a volatile relationship with his teenage daughter, and a one-night stand with the area’s forensic coroner who wants more from him than he is able to give.
Rife with ‘red herrings’ the plot leaves the reader guessing as to the identity of the serial killer. More than once, I thought I had the killer sussed out, but, as I’m sure the author intended, I was dead wrong.
I’m now eager to follow DCI Paolo Sterling in further books and cannot wait to see what they hold in store. So, with warnings about gritty, disturbing, subject matter, I am highly recommending “The Retriever of Souls”.
I received a complimentary digital copy of “The Retriever of Souls” from Emma who runs Damppebbles Blog Tours in order that I might participate in this tour.
A gripping, disturbing story about a man who kills prostitutes believing he is saving their souls. On the trail is DI Stirling who is policeman in charge. A real page turner from whoa to go highly reccomend this book to any one who loves a good thriller.
I have a little confession to make. I have had a couple of Lorraine's books on my ever increasing 'to be read' mountain for a little while now. I haven't got around to reading one...……......until now that is. Having enjoyed reading 'Retriever Of Souls' as much as I did, I am now quite annoyed at myself for leaving it this long to discover how flipping fantastic Lorraine's books really are. I can guarantee that Lorraine's other books will not be not be on that mountain for very much longer. I flipping well LOVED reading 'Retriever Of Souls' but more about that in a bit. I have to admit that I took a bit of a shine to Detective Inspector Paolo Stirling pretty early on in this story. He is a dedicated police officer, whose dedication to his work has led to problems in his personal life. He is currently separated from his wife as they are 'taking some time out'. Stirling lives on his own in a bedsit, which isn't ideal but that's all he could find at the time. He dotes on his daughter and he sees her regularly, even though she lives with her mother. He has been working with his team for a while now although a new Detective Sergeant has started working with the team and he doesn't seem all that pleasant given some of his attitudes. I loved the way in which Stirling kept slapping him down every time he made some crude comment or showed his prejudices. Stirling is determined and when is given a case, he will do what he can to solve the case and to achieve justice for the victims of crime and their families. It didn't take me long at all to get into this story. In fact by the time I got to the end of the first page, I just knew that I wasn't going to be able to put the book down very easily. Reading 'Retriever Of Souls' became an addiction. I would pick the book up only intending to read a couple of chapters at any one time but I found that I would still be sat there reading over half a dozen chapters later. The crimes were so horrific in nature that I just had to keep reading to see how the story concluded and to see if Stirling and his team managed to solve the case. I read the book over the course of a day which was pretty good going for me. Usually I have the attention span of a gnat and I am easily distracted but not with this book I wasn't. I was able to shut out all other distractions and focus solely on the book. 'Retriever Of Souls' is brilliantly written. The author certainly knows how to grab your attention from the start. Once Lorraine has your attention, she will not let it go until the moment you have finished the story. It's as if through her writing, Lorraine develops a hold over you. Lorraine writes so realistically and uses such vivid descriptions that I really did feel as though I was part of the story myself and an extra member of Stirling's team. Reading 'Retriever Of Souls' was much like being on a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with more twists and turns than you can even count. There were times where I almost had to read through my fingers as I feared what was going to happen next or what was waiting for me over the page. I then gave myself a bit of a kick and realised that if I wanted to know how the story concluded then of course I had to keep reading. Some of the details of the crimes and the run up to the crimes are a bit gruesome and a bit graphic too, but it didn't bother me because I used to work in safeguarding and some of the details I read in that role make the details of this book look tame. I have just one little teensy, weeny point to raise. The author has used the title of 'WPC' for female police officers but as far as I am aware that term is now not used and instead police constables are referred to as 'PC' irrespective of gender. That's just my take on it. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Retriever Of Souls' and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will definitely be reading Lorraine's other books just as soon as I can and I look forward to reading her forthcoming book 'Rage & Retribution', which is due for release on 13th February 2020. I cannot wait. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
This is the first in The DI Sterling series from Lorraine Mace.
Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is a committed police officer to the point where his marriage is over and family life is a mess….
Bodies of prostitutes are being found, mutilated and dumped and he is determined to catch the killer before further women are murdered….
With chapters from the murderers perspective this gives an insight into his religious mania, his state of mind and gruesome details of his kills…
Full of interesting and believable characters with its clever background stories giving them a feeling of reality.
Paolo’s is quite a complex character and his team are great and work well together….will they manage to catch their prey?
I really enjoyed this compelling thriller and will be looking out for the next in the series…and I can thoroughly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a crime thriller.
Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources for the opportunity to participate in this blog tour and for the promotional materials and a free copy of the ebook. This is my honest, unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this great British crime drama. It’s the first of a series and I’m already looking forward to reading the next.
Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling’s personal life is a mess. He’s separated from his wife and has high hopes of getting back with her, and his teenage daughter, Katy, is going off the rails. His professional life isn’t faring any better. His new partner, Detective Sergeant Dave Johnson, is obnoxious and has no respect for women. Add to that, the fact that someone is murdering prostitutes and dumping their bodies in rubbish dumps and there aren’t any leads.
While we follow Paolo as he deals with his complicated relationships and tries to solve the case, we also get a close look at the murderer. The villain was brought up by a religious zealot who taught him that sex was a sin, and he believes that by killing the women he is saving their souls.
There is much more to this book than the crime and solving of it. It’s a character-driven book and they are well written and relatable… easy to like, or hate. It was interesting to watch them and their various relationships evolve and grow.
This was a gripping, gritty, and, at times, gruesome thriller, with interesting characters, a number of suspects, and plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing.
This book was a good, solid police procedural and I really enjoyed it.
Paolo Sterling has some issues - he has a partner at work whom he is still getting to know, his ex-wife is sending him mixed messages and his daughter seems to be running off the rails.
Then there is the case he is working on, a series of young women who are murdered by the same hand. There are a lot of things that muddy the waters in this case though, and at one point I suspected three different men of being the killer! It speaks to the talents of the author that I really had no clue who the murderer was until she revealed him.
4.5 stars from me. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Retriever of Souls is dark and intense. It starts off from the killer’s point of view and continues to make you uncomfortable and but incredibly intrigued.
I could not put this book down. It was like watching a crime show on TV. That is how incredibly detailed and absorbing this novel really is. Lorraine Mace is fantastic, and her writing is so realistic.
I can’t say enough positive things about Retriever of Souls. I don’t want to give you too many details because this is a novel you should just experience for yourself!
*I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour with Rachel's Random Resources. All opinions are my own.*
What's not to like about Lorraine Mace's Retriever of Souls? Great characterisation. D.I. Sterling is a fascinating character facing many hurdles in his own troubled personal life. This book has it all, serial killer, fast pace, twists, turns. Prostitutes have been getting targetted at an alarming rate. The killer believing that sex is the work of the devil... Delicious plot that will have you turning the pages and burning the lunch. What better way to spend this period of Covid 19 isolation? Will I read more from Lorraine? Don't ask silly questions, I'm off to order the next one right now.
Retriever of Souls, what a fantastic title for a book and it was perfect for this story of death, mutilation and family connections. D. I. Paulo Sterling is a very troubled cop, recently separated from his wife, he's struggling to cope with his new life when bodies start turning up, bodies which have been treated in the most vicious of ways. A killer on the loose who believes he is saving the souls of women tempted by the devil. Can Sterling catch this maniac and at the same time sort out his troubled personal life. This book touches on some of the more zealous aspects of religion but through the twisted eyes of a serial killer. Having served as a police constable for 20 years, I love books which show the everyday office politics which I remember so well. Though I can't say the same about the use of "WPC" which went out in the 80's. Lorraine Mace is a new author to me, as is Paulo Sterling, but as I'm about to start book 2, Children in Chains, I think we're going to be good friends.
This is one of those reviews in which I can’t reveal too much because I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t read it yet. Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is after a sadistic killer who believes sex is the devil’s work. He is on a mission to rid the world of it by killing young women. He honestly believes he is doing God’s work. Sterling must stop him before he kills again.
What makes this procedural unique is that it is not only a murder mystery/thriller, but it delves deeply into the psyche of the killer and DI Sterling as well. That added a depth to the book that sometimes you don’t find in other procedurals. This is the first in a series, so I’m looking forward to reading the next book!
If you like your police drama gritty and dark, then this is for you. The pace is kept up from the first to the final page, and the action will keep you guessing. Just as you think you've worked it out there's a twist to throw you off the scent. Once the denouement is played out and you think you've nothing more to discover there's a final twist that you didn't see coming.
If you're a fan of Martina Cole then this is for you albeit from the side of the police rather than the villains. Great opening to a series of books.
Retriever souls is a very dark book. It is the first book in the series. It is about an abused man who turned into an abused and becomes a serial killer. It has a very deep insight into police work, and how everyone who has anything to do with certain cases gets affected. I would certainly recommend that you read this book if you have a strong stomach and like reading about dark places. Once read you need to read the next book, children in chains. Thank you for the Arc copy of both these books.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a copy of this book from TBC reviewers thank you Where to start? If you’re looking a for a new fast paced crime series you won’t go far wrong with FI Stirling books. Lorraine has created a believable and workable character in Stirling who manages (unlike many other crime thrillers) to make relationships with other characters in the books which helps keep the story lines knitted together. The topic is raw and possibly not for the faint hearted but it’s real and current An excellent effort I cannot wait for book 2!
The first in the DI Sterling series, Retriever of Souls is a dark and depraved tale that is not for the feint of heart. From its opening chapters the scene is set and you have to have a stomach for the grim and gruesome to enjoy the book.
Lorraine Mace spares no blushes within these pages and there were a few scenes that I found heavy going - but that all adds to the darkness and the bleak sense of corruption, debauchery and immorality that exists in the mind of the killer.
Lots of interest, intrigue and red herrings made this a fast paced and engrossing read. DI Paolo Sterling is an interesting new character and I will certainly be looking out for book 2.
I really enjoyed it. An action packed psychological thriller that will keep you guessing to the end.I found it hard to put down because I was wrapped up in the characters and found myself rooting for Paolo to get the murderer. If you enjoy British crime thrillers, you will love Retriever of Souls. I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.
Retriever of Souls by Lorraine Mace. Brought up believing that sex is the devil's work, a killer only finds release once he has saved his victim's souls. Abiding by his vision, he marks them as his. A gift to guide his chosen ones on the rightful path to redemption. Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is out to stop him, but Paolo has problems of his own. Hunting down the killer as the death toll rises, the lines soon blur between Paolo's personal and professional lives. This was a very enjoyable read with some great characters. I liked the ending too. Looking forward to the next book. 4*.
Paolo is a likeable main character with a lot to deal with, not just at work but in his family life too. This continues into book two and is an excellent storyline. As with her second novel, the author is not afraid to delve into darker storylines. I thought this was a great read.
I could not put my kindle down while reading this! I’m a massive fan of a police procedural especially when it is part of a series, which you probably already know if you have been following my blog for a little while. One of the main things I love about this genre is the protagonist, which in this case is D.I. Paolo Sterling, not having their life together. Struggling with a work life balance, which pulls their life into a downward spiral. Paolo is extremely relatable, separated from his long term wife with a teenage daughter. I love the dynamics of the relationship between Paolo and his daughter, it’s quite strained at times as many relationships are when children become teenagers. Yet you can tell that they have something special.
