You may have heard this before: “the real work of being an author happens once the book is launched.” Well, that’s where this book comes in. According to the authors, “we chose to format this book in essential questions.” Each of the fifty chapters asks and answers their most-asked questions with space to record your notes and to get you thinking about your goals. Each chapter ends with a list of things to do. I just wish the Kindle edition could be interactive so that you could actually make notes in the spaces provided. The book includes links in the text for downloading free resources from the Wise Ink. The Appendix is also full of helpful resources, including a sample marketing calendar, sample content calendar, sample email marketing campaign, a list of 101 ways to market your book, a comprehensive glossary of marketing terms, and a full index.

Key takeaway: “We could never repeat this enough: any marketing you do for your book, especially marketing that has a large price tag, will only be effective if you are willing to promote it yourself.”

An invaluable marketing resource for both new and established indie authors.

I received this book in return for an honest review.

All authors want their books to do well, to sell, but also to mean something to their readers—to have an impact or at least to be memorable. But how can that happen unless other people first read their books? Goals are nuanced, and this book, Buzz: The Ultimate Guide to Book Marketing, addresses different possibilities.

The authors of this book promise “to answer the top fifty questions that…can shift an author’s potential to truly make an impact.” Sounds great! What’s even better is that this book is more than mere marketing. It’s about getting authors to understand the sense of uniqueness that they bring to their work.

Buzz is set up to answer many essential questions such as “Where do I begin,” “What general timeline should I follow,” “Should I hire a publicist,” “What are some cheap and easy ways to market my book,” and many other great questions.

It asks you, the author to answer questions such as: “Why your book is important, who you’ve written it for, and how you expect it to impact your audience.” There’s great talk about launching your book as well.

There are many gems in this book such as, “We live in an age where it is simply not enough to have an incredible book—you need to have an exceptional presence to complement it (7).

Buzz discusses how to make marketing fun and not burn yourself out. That is certainly a needed topic for authors nowadays. It’s geared toward people with a variety of budgets, which is also something to appreciate. Helpfully, it answers: what are the newest tools to help authors market their books? The authors of Buzz here tell us.

There are some great charts for authors to fill in their information, to have at a glance, and to help them plan. Also, tips on how to use Amazon to one’s advantage are very handy. The different ways of selling are discussed. There are so many choices! But what are the pros and cons of each? This book will tell you.

Brimming with information on topics to sell your books, and to make you think about issues you may not even have known you needed to know about, Buzz is a winner, sure to be greatly helpful to authors planning their success.

"Buzz: The Ultimate Guide to Book Marketing" by Roseanne Cheng and Dara Beevas is a nicely detailed description of important aspects to consider when trying to sell the book you have worked so long on. I like the tone, which is both informative and encouraging, as well as the pragmatic suggestions and evaluations of the pros and cons of various methods. Not only are there chapters that detail the journey an author should be undertaking at various stages while (and after) writing a book, but there are appendices with samples and suggestions, a detailed index, and references to the company’s website which also has helpful files.

I think this book would be an important resource for any author to consult and it will both guide them through the process of marketing and stimulate brainstorming. It is an overwhelming concept that not only does an author work hard to create a polished book, but THEN the hard work of marketing begins. This title gives concrete suggestions for dealing with that massive task and reminds us to approach it with enthusiasm rather than dread, and to PLAN one’s attack and constantly evaluate the success of various stratagems.

If you’re looking for an easy-to-read, helpful guide to marketing as an Indie author, this will be a great resource for you. While this book doesn’t offer super in-depth analysis to each individual aspect of marketing, it provides an fantastic overview to everything you’ll need to know, from social media marketing to book launch events. The book is written Q&A style, with helpful tips from the authors and workbook style exercises to get authors thinking critically about their marketing efforts. I wish I had read this before I launched my first book - but I’m glad I have it now.

I set out to tackle a few chapters and topics a week but went through it much more quickly. I came out excited, with pages and pages of notes on how to improve and expand on my marketing efforts. The book is wary about gimmicks and gives helpful advice to avoid them and instead guides authors on how to connect with audiences in more organic, authentic ways. No surprise, lots of wisdom to be gleaned from the experts at Wise Ink!
