Philly & Friends: Who Do I See in the Mirror?

"One of the most amazing children's books I've read this year. What's not to love about the book? Firstly the message of the book, it begins to introduce and teach children about loving themselves from an early age..." -Books and Bakes

"I love this beautiful book! I cannot wait to include it in my classroom library! The Little girl has so much self love and it made my heart so happy to read!" -The Multicultural Classroom

Who Do I See in the Mirror? is a simple yet powerful book written to introduce children to the concept of self-love and acceptance. It explores the various parts of the body, making the idea of self-discovery exciting for children while encouraging them to love each part. It reminds children that they are much more than their physical appearance. This gorgeous, colour-illustrated book concludes with a strong message that it's what is on the inside that counts. A wonderful finishing touch is that it ends with a certificate that each child can hang up on their wall.

BOOK There is only one me. As Philly looks at her reflection in the mirror, she realises that from her curly hair to her legs that love to dance, she is unique. However, what makes her truly special is her good heart and curious mind. The important message conveyed is for children to love the skin they are in. It's what you are on the inside that matters most.

SOCIAL Philly & Friends is a contemporary children's brand created to empower literacy. Each book sold sponsors into the hands of an underprivileged child.

What I love about Who Do I See in the Mirror? is that the book isn't just about the cute little brown girl in the mirror--it's about the reader learning all his/her body parts and loving them for what they are too. And it's about learning to love others who may not look like them. There's so much subtext in the reading, without hitting over the reader's heads. And I think that kids of all ages, from the just learning to talk, to the learning to read, to the proficient reader will understand the concepts at multiple levels.

“Who Do I See in the Mirror?” is a delight for all ages. The jacket declares “the important message relayed to children is to love the skin they’re in.”

As an adult reading the book, I too felt the beauty of loving who you are, all of you, with your flaws seen not as flaws but as unique expressions of YOU. I was pulled right into the narrative, and loved the way it flowed from page to page with the “but I am not just my {fill in the blank}. I am much more.”

The illustrations are gorgeous and absolutely fitting for the book. I highly recommend for ALL children, and maybe the child in all of us. I for one appreciated myself more after reading it! Kudos to the author and illustrator.

Who Do I See in the Mirror! Is a fantastic story about accepting you! Your nationality, hair, face, skin color, body shape everything that makes you unique. In today’s world many looks in the mirror seeing only their flaws, yet never recognizing their own individual beauty.

Each person has something distinctive about them. Educating children on accepting their own uniqueness is a wonderful message which can transcend into adulthood.

There was a beautiful message that ended this book on: beautifully and wonderfully made by loving me.

Philly looks in the mirror and wonders who she is.

Who Do I See in the Mirror? is a truly lovely children’s book. The language is totally accessible to young independent readers but works equally well for those children needing the text read to them. The use of repetition reinforces both theme and vocabulary so that there’s a super opportunity for children to learn as they enjoy finding out what Philly likes about herself.

There are vibrant illustrations that provide positive subliminal messages not directly featured in the text which I feel is hugely important. For example, Philly’s friends are a mix of ethnicities so that children can see how we are all important, regardless of race. Snacks on the kitchen table suggest healthy fruit and veg as well as the cake treats in the picnic basket, prompting healthy eating. Philly is active and curious – exactly as we’d like all children to be.

I loved the way in which Philly appreciates each of her physical attributes, but that the most important part of who she is comes from having a good heart and curious mind. The ‘Awesome Award’ certificate at the end of the book allows any young reader to be appreciated and made to feel special.

Who Do I See in the Mirror? is utterly charming. It’s beautifully illustrated and with a very important confidence building message about self-image so that I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Philly and I’m sure any child would too! I really recommend Who Do I See in the Mirror? to share with young children, especially as doing so will help underprivileged children world wide too.

I love how Vese inspires children to explore themselves and identify what makes them special. This book imparts confidence and is full of words like: love, special, and beautiful. In addition, the beautifully illustrated pictures encourage children to be outside, play, spend time with family, and explore nature. All of these things are critical for a child’s healthy development. It was also refreshing to see a diverse main character, as this is lacking in many children’s books.
My children enjoyed pointing to all of their body parts as we read the book together. They were tickled that the little girl had similar body traits and likes as them. And, they promptly showed me how they loved to dance too!

Wonderful book that encourages youth to love ALL of themselves. From a parents POV I adore this book because of the message. In a world where everyone is saying change yourself, this book encourages the opposite. Very important to introduce books like this at an early age.

As an educator, I quickly began to realize how I could utilize this book as a tool for pre-k. A great read along to pair with a lesson on body parts or learning about the basics of the human body. Recommend for youth 6 and under.

This is a sweet story about a little girl, Philly, and what she sees when she looks in the mirror. She identifies each of her features and notes that, although she likes each of her features on a stand alone basis, there is much more to her as a complete person than any of her features in isolation. This is a story about acceptance of yourself and your body parts and is a lovely way to teach this concept to little girls and also boys, who can struggle with self acceptance.

The book is beautifully illustrated and will appeal to younger children.

A perfect book for little girls who are trying to understand themselves and the world.

The narrative is gentle and loving, the book is well presented, and the illustrations are beautiful, classic and vintage. On top of that, it is so full of love to the little one, and its message “There is only one me,” is much needed for children to build their self-esteem from the very start of their life.

I highly recommend this book.

So beautifully written and I am so happy that my daughter, and even my son can relate to one of their bedtime stories!

It is important to teach our kids self love and to be confident and happy in the body they were born with. This book does a good job at reinforcing that!

Looking forward to read more from this author.
