This is based on the true story of a cat named Simon, who, through his heroic actions, won the hearts of his shipmates aboard the HMS Amethyst, and in the process was promoted to be a full member of the crew (Able Sea Cat). He also won the highest decoration possible for an animal : the Dickin Medal. In fact, as of this publishing, he is the only cat to ever win that award.
