Metamorphosis is another fantastically crafted work by Stephen Trujillo, a prequel to “A Tale of the Grenada Raiders” Written in his distinctive prose and wonderful defiance of conventional literature, his auto-biographical account is Homeric in structure and cadence, yet as tough and gritty as the best war narratives.
If you’ve ever wondered how an Army Ranger is created, and just exactly what one must do to become one, this is the blueprint. While tactics and mission orientation have changed in the last 40 years, nothing really changes on the path one travels during the metamorphosis, nor does it ever end. If you want it bad enough, the Army always has another level, another opportunity to suffer and challenge yourself, and Stephen took it all the way.
This book is loaded with never published color photos of Ranger life back when it was hard, interwoven with philosophical reflection, and as bonus, Stephan offers a prequel to an upcoming book about his efforts with the DEA’s mission to interdict Peruvian drug operations. I can’t recommend this book enough; its unique style and subject matter are unprecedented.
