For the last two years someone has been stealing dinner forks from people’s homes. What seems like a twisted joke turns out to be more than meets the eye. Who would be doing such menial act and why? It was a so so plot.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. In this situation, I always try to give the author and story a fighting chance for a good review. It was harder with this book. In its favor, I did not identify the villain in advance of the reveal. Looking back that seems strange, considering the same clue offered over and over again. With no back story and an ending that feels incomplete, I never found a reason why, which leaves me conflicted about the entire story.
A police procedural looking at a criminal who breaks into houses and steals only forks. The author introduces the main character and you seem to be inside his skin. The plot is quirky and interesting. It is also a test to see if have any ingrained prejudices, from the start of the novel to the end.
My main criticisms are (i) the book is too short, the idea is there, it just needs more depth; (ii) it was sloppily written and/or edited.
If you ever get a chance to read something by Edele Winnie think very carefully, and if you decide to do it late October is a good time, or New Year's Eve if you are spending it alone. Don't bother to lock your basement windows. It won't help. "Queen of Forks" is odd. Yes, it is.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review on Goodreads.
Nice quick read. Quirky stories - there is a bonus story at e end. Fun guessing the culprit. Recommend to anyone looking for a short story. Would read more from this author.
I received an electronic copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. The plot definitely kept me guessing, but it was not my type of story. The editing left something to be desired, as I found myself distracted by spelling and grammatical errors.
I really enjoyed the story. The whole concept of a person who is obsessed with taking forks is different and intriguing. The culprit was not who I was expecting and would highly recommend the short read.
