Cobe is a lad who has been ostracized by the people of his village and has no friends. He bargains with the other boys to help him investigate an abandoned cave believing there must be some treasure hidden. When their quest goes haywire, the other boys leave an injured Cobe behind. When he regains conscious he flees the cave but finds his village completely abandoned with the exception of deformed mutt of a dog who tags behind him. Adrianna has been brought up to become a tinker but when she finds herself alone working the family business, she refuses the criminal ‘protection’ plan and loses everything. These separate events lead these two young people to join forces along with Lucky, the dog. Well-written story with lots of action and mysteries to solve.
Protagonist Cobe is a feckless hero in this fantasy, yet it is not entirely his fault. Actually, he is quite intelligent and resourceful, but a hard life and difficult circumstances have rendered him feckless. Living in a small village, motherless, surrounded by the products of interbreeding, he is one of the few intelligent individuals there and so is constantly despised and denigrated. So is Ariana, an orphaned metalworker and jewelry maker who inherited her mother's shop. Considered different from the villagers (she does seem to possess obsessive compulsive disorder), she is left distraught and homeless when inexplicably the stone building containing her shop and workplace burns. Then Cobe returns to the village after an attempt on his life to discover the village gone. Will these two lost youths and a wild dog even find survival, let alone manage to thrive and build new lives?
I've picked up a few books by this author but this was the first of them I've read and thus my first exposure to his style.
At first I was unsure whether I'd enjoy it given the way the title character of Cobe acts and thinks. The author though clearly was setting up some events and revelations later on and I was looking forward to those.
The other primary character of Adriana was much more fascinating from the get-go and once the two characters met up the story really got moving in terms of having a quest and a rough idea of what type of foe they would ultimately clash with. There's also a dog who travels with them. The dog will prove to be important.
As the story picked-up its' pace more I found myself thoroughly invested and trying to think where it was heading. There were definite surprises including one moment during the climax of the story where I said aloud "Oh boy this is going to be good" and it was a great little pay-off to the beginning of the story. That's the thing overall about this tale the author has woven -how everything connects together and surprises you. It feels like a self-contained story but it's done in such a way that the author could come back to this world...and I hope they do.
Not my typical reading material but it was a very interesting book. Somewhat confusing a couple of times, but I got it in the end. Would have liked a different ending but I can see where this one has merits also. Adriana is a very strong and proud character.
What strip this story is. A young woman and a man to together to destroy evil spirits and people. They have a dog with them the whole story. The 3 of them manage to get rid of a lot of bad. Great book.
Not to impressed with the story. It's well written but could not get into it. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
