Explains how Arthur Miller came to write the screenplay for The Misfits, offers a day-by-day account of the filming, and describes the many problems which had to be overcome to complete the film
GREAT to read after watching the movie starring Marilyn Monroe , Clark Gable Montgomery Clift, Eli Wallach and Thelma Ritter. Screenplay and story by Arthur Miller directed by John Huston and a great musical background by Alex North. I consider this film one of the first in an american NEW WAVE that led to the 1960s new directors like warren beatty, francis ford copolla , steven spielberg, etc. The film is a western but the ambiance is more at times like FELLINI . The presence of a sad-happy Marilyn floating at times dancing around a tree and shouting at the world for its cruelty is spellbinding. What I liked the best was the tension throughout the film between Roslyn ( Marilyn Monroe) and GUIDO (Eli Wallach). This book relates all the problems that surfaced bringing this film to a conclusion. And the added reflection of Mailyn's death two years later which gave the film an added significance and tragic aura. Great photo section included.
A very dry, very polite recounting of some aspects of the film shoot. I am left wondering what the purpose or goal of this book was, but I'm glad we have it, nevertheless.
Fascinating first-hand account of the filming of The Misfits, which was as dramatic off-screen as on. Essential reading for movie buffs and an important source on the main players - Monroe, Gable etc.
If you're interested in a painfully detailed description of every aspect involved in making a movie, this is for you. If you're looking for insight into the dynamics between the cast, what Marilyn had to say about her role in the movie, and general dish, then don't bother.
3 1/2 stars. This was interesting, but I couldn't help thinking, that, since it's about Clark Gable, Montgomery Clift, Marilyn Monroe, and Arthur Miller, on the set of one of the most infamous movies ever made, it should have been MORE interesting.
