The opioid epidemic is laying waste to America. Overdose deaths have decimated a generation and lowered overall life expectancy. Between the greed of Big Pharma, the war on drugs, and ineffectual treatment, addicts and their families face an uphill battle in getting the help they need. But there is a way out! Noted recovery professionals Eric Spofford and Piers Kaniuka are providing some much needed hope. In this book, they describe how they beat opiate addiction and went on to help thousands of addicts find recovery. Along the way, they discuss the root causes of the current opiate epidemic, which include dislocation, the prison industrial complex, the greed of the pharmaceutical industry, stress, racism, poverty, and much more. In addition, Real People, Real Recovery explains the difference between recovery and sobriety and what actually constitutes success in treatment.
I read this book shortly after it came out, but I’m circling back to write a review because I wish more people would read it.
The authors provide compelling accounts of their own experiences with addiction and with recovery. Their stories join millions of others that show that the solution to these crises are to be found via spiritual practices, rather than the broken judicial system or “wonder drugs” like suboxone and methadone.
As people whose lives depend upon our constant thought of others, what a time to be alive. This book is not only a testament to the efficacy of the 12 Steps and a spiritual way of life; it is a call to action. This begins with challenging the conventional thinking of the western world on matters like mental health and addiction.
This is an important book for the battle against an epidemic that is stopping family lineages in their tracks. Read it.
