Lesson of Her Death -

This story follows Detective Bill Corde as he tries to track down the killer of a university student in the small town of New Lebanon, despite the many hurdles put in place by the Sheriff, who is more concerned about getting the case wrapped up as soon as possible in time for the November election, and by the Dean of the university, who wants to keep the police away from the campus despite the possibility of a professor being involved. The story is relatively fast paced and has plenty of twists and turns but, at over 500 pages, the length of the story does take away the suspense and tension to a certain extent although Deaver does maintain this fairly well. Not a bad read, a good thriller in its own right, but not one of his best.

Speaking In Tongues -

A fast paced thriller with plenty of twists and turns, this is better than Lesson of Her Death as it's shorter so it keeps the tension and anticipation better and there is less need for fill text to keep the story going as Deaver jumps from one scene and one character to another. The characters are detailed enough to seem real without drowning the reader with too much information and even though we know the who throughout the book, the tension is still very much there as he's is not only seemingly unpredictable but intelligent and careful in his plans and actions. Still not one of his best but still a very good read that shows his potential (which has since been fulfilled) as a thriller author.
