Amazing and inspiring book. Through a detailed study of teatrises, compositions, pedagogical books and recordings, the author presents us with a description not only of the most important technical aproaches in the history of piano playing but also, and even more important, how these technical aproaches and principles relate to the aesthetic paradigms of each composer and period.
Taking into account the historical course of musical compositional and performatic ideas, as well as the development of the piano from the 18th to the 20th century, the text allow us to better understand the intrinsic relation between a composers style and the technical tools conceived to perform his/her music.
The author invites us to reflect on the original technical aproach chosen by the composer, the develpoment of different aproaches through history and how we, living in the 21th century, can use this knowledge to find our own aproaches in the art of interpretation.
A must read for every classical pianist and especially for piano teachers!
