What you are currently holding is Tunku Halim’s fifth collection of short stories. You’ll find a whole range of characters in the pages to come, including hungry, slimy creatures, a cunningly cuddly toy, a vengeful romantic, a killer bodyguard and a wife who refuses to stay dead. As a murderous treat, there is also the novella Lodger, which may confirm your worst fears about digital technology. These stories were written well before that most significant of dates, 9 May 2018; well before the groundswell that swept away 61 years of Barisan Nasional rule. So some of the references to politicians and the political climate might be out of date. Unless (and this is the true horror) things have actually remained the same…
Tunku Halim has lived in the UK, Australia, the Philippines, Thailand and Malaysia. He worked as Legal Counsel for a global IT company before turning to writing.
Twenty books later, he is dubbed Asia’s Steven King. By delving into Malay myth, legends and folklore, his writing is regarded as ‘World Gothic’.
His novel, Dark Demon Rising, was nominated for the 1999 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award whilst his second novel, Vermillion Eye, is used as a study text in The National University of Singapore’s Language and Literature course.
His short story has also won first prize in a 1998 Fellowship of Australian Writers competition. In Malaysia, he has had three consecutive wins in Malaysia's Star-Popular Readers’ Choice Awards between 2015 and 2017.
My experience in reading this book was very underwhelming. Even upon completion of the book, I could not determine the purpose/motive of Tunku Halim writing and publishing this book. It really looks like 13 poorly written stories conjured by a teenager. Not to mention the fact that there are many instances of using sex to appeal to/entice the reader. That was the moment when it began to feel cheap. I initially bought this book with excitement in hopes of supporting a local author and maybe have it become one of my favourites. However, it's just like what Tunku Halim said himself in the book, its all dogshit.
Or maybe I'm being to blunt with my thoughts. Perhaps this book might appeal to other readers. Please be the judge of the book yourself as I'm merely sharing my experience with this book.
Even thou I had a little bit of disappointment with my first purchased from the same author, but I decided to give it a second go. Previously I gave him two stars. And now...
The stories are not what I expected it to be. I wanted more than just a story about a ghost who raped his ex-gf, a guy who make out with his dead wife yada yada yada. Is it too much if we as the reader wanting something more than just that?
Pleasantly suprised as the first few times I read Tunku Halim, his stories have gotten a bit cliche. Nancy Ng a bit more interesting and although I'm not a fan of lengthy description of scenes and fashion sense lol, the plots are engaging and inventive.
This book would've been great had he not decided to write only when he's horny. Your kinks are weird. I'm here for horror stories, not to read your fantasy.
