Although the hurricane had been downgraded to a tropical storm, the incredible rainfall that hit the state resulted in the worst flooding ever recorded. The Great Flood of 1985 killed 47 people in West Virginia and wrought damages in excess of $550 million, America’s worst disaster of the year.
