About the author

Hazel Hutchins Wilson was born on April 8, 1898 in Portland, Maine. She earned her B.A. from Bates College and a B.S. from Simmons College, Boston, Massachusetts. Ms. Wilson was a professional librarian at the high school and college level and a lecturer at George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was the author of over 15 children's books. Her most famous books are the Herbert series, which was based upon the actions of her son and his friends.

Remembered this from my childhood and borrowed it from my mom to read aloud. As keeps happening with books I remember fondly, it wasn’t as magical as I remember it being. I think part of the problem is that I read them quickly to myself and reading them aloud over a long time is just not the same - some books are written to be read by kids and not aloud, and these fun vintage ones seem to be not super well written to be good read alouds. Still, fun!
