Having been in Ireland for many years during the Troubles, and knowing many people involved, I found this book to be more honest than most. One review somewhere said the author was pro-Irish Republican leadership. However, his analysis of British Intelligence Agencies is close to the bone and the authors sources there are recognisable as "people who were there". I dont think that this author was any more a supporter of the Irish Republican leadership than MI6 was. That's a different question for a different forum. Certainly, the book seems written for a British audience more than an Irish one. I am not sure that this is a bad thing. The content certainly challenges all mindsets. Perhaps thats why dissident republicans had an issue with it. As a self confessed "Brit", The Hunger Strikes made me think about my preconceptions.
