This would be a rather boring book if you weren't into medicine or chemistry. I found it very informative. It goes through the history of the many chemists and doctors who working by trial and error, and sometimes by accident, discovered that certain microbes kill some germs. When they discovered some that were effective against gram positive rods, they were able to conquer pneumonia, diptheria, etc. It was a long process, though, and laid the ground work for how we defeat germs that cause disease today. .
I picked this book up because the husband & wife tea,m who wrote it were the real authors of the Ken Holt juvenile mystery series. A lot of research went into this book.
