The Dog Lady of Mexico: A Heartwarming Journey into Animal Rescue

Rate this book
Rose’s lifelong dream was to move to a tropical paradise and continue her work as an artist. She imagined waking up by the ocean, sipping her coffee on the beach and heading to her pottery studio. There she would spin sun-drenched inspirations while her husband would share his passion for food at his ocean side cantina. It was all coming together for Rose when a good deed changed her life forever. Little did she know that this small favor would gradually become an obsession that she could not ignore. Take a trip with The Dog Lady of Mexico – a fictional novel based on a true story. Follow this heart-wrenching journey of love, loss and survival while building an animal rescue on the tiny island of Isla Mujeres in Mexico.

Have you ever picked up a book, read it, and then thought to yourself…. “Wow….I should really get on this whole making the world a better place thing….” Well, that’s just what this book did for me. Reading about other peoples’ triumphs is inspiring and truly makes you want to jump out of your reading chair and go and do SOMETHING, ANYTHING!
To be honest, this story warmed my heart – and I love the messages it sends. Unbeknownst to me, Mexico doesn’t care about its’ feral animal population. Most residents would rather ignore and/or deliberately KILL an animal than help it. The sad fact is, this is probably still the truth about the majority of Mexico – that being said, no, I have NOT researched this – because I don’t want to know how terrible it is THERE when all I have to do is open an app here on my phone, or turn on a regular tv channel and see the cruelty done to the animals left on the streets here in the States.
“Rose” will rope you in and have you following along her journey, the highest highs and the deepest lows. You get to feeling about her pups and dogs as she does – you’re willing and hoping that they survive and that her neighbors and the surrounding communities will begin treating the animals with respect and not neglect/hate. Tears will be shed by those of us whom deeply care for animals and have a place in their hearts for them. This isn’t the type of book you read and promptly forget about.
This is a treasure trove of everything from starting out with nothing to gaining everything and all of the hard work in-between. Acquiring assistance from locals to learning the ins/outs of different types of surgeries and the amount of time, patience, care and a zillion other small things that add up to how much effort and persistence it takes to truly accomplish something genuinely good in this world. Not only do you start to gain an understanding on this, you start to realize that no matter how much effort you may put towards something, it may not always go the way you planned.
Fortunately, the majority of us still keep going strong and doing what we can to make this place better. As for me and Mexico….someday, I hope to make it to Isla Mujeres to visit “Rose” and her home filled with dogs from all over and all types of breeds. I know (per her written word) that she’s not overly fond of too many visitors, as she has WORK TO DO gosh dang it – but I’d still love to meet the woman and her amazing team who’ve made a difference in that small community on an island in Mexico. Her and her team have made an impact on the kind of person that I strive to be as I get older, and I’d enjoy thanking them for everything they’ve accomplished so far.

My Friend, Alison

I first met Alison when I contacted her about doing a spay/neuter clinic in a village in the jungle called San Cosme. Our mission group had built a medical clinic there and knew that the health of the villagers would be better if the health of the dog population was better. The next year Alison and her RV shower up with volunteers and vets the next two years and they helped at least 250 dogs and a few days. The villagers were so grateful.
I have volunteered almost every year since in Rancho Viejo with her. The Dog Lady of Mexico is an eye-opener. A novel based on a true heroine to the dog rescues. Thank you, Alison, for giving us this week into the rescue life.

Love and determination

Inspiring story of dogs and a determined caring woman who lives on a small island in Mexico. Her work does not stop on the borders of her island but goes into the poor pueblos of the mainland.

The impressive work before and after a major hurricane is amazing to read as is all her accomplishments. How lucky she was to have her incredible husband at her side. How lucky these dogs were to have had "Rose and Brad" on their side.

I believe this book and the money it raises will continue to care for the dogs on Isla. So run and purchase a few.

Having travelled to Isla Mujeres several times over the past 10 years or so, I’ve had the opportunity to glimpse the wonderful difference Allison and her team and volunteers have made for the dogs on the island. Their tireless effort to improve the lives of animals on Isla and elsewhere is a true inspiration. Isla Animals is a worthy cause to support, as are all animal support groups across the globe.
