Is there ever a good enough reason to let your children think you’re dead?
Fourth in the Kindle Top-20, USA-Today bestselling Pacific Horizons series, in which characters facing tragedy, heartbreak, and painful family secrets are drawn to the wild beauty of the natural world. Breaching whales and howling wolves refresh their spirits, but only human love can heal their souls...
Since leaving her home in Maine two years ago, geriatric nurse Mei Lin has done nothing but make mistakes. For penance, she took a private-duty nursing job no one else wanted -- caring for a dying woman in a remote Alaskan town in the dead of winter. But affable optimist Mei Lin couldn’t even get self-punishment right. She’s been hopelessly happy in the welcoming little community of Gustavus, and now, as the summer sun lingers and the wildflowers bloom, she realizes that her real penance will be having to leave.
Meeting mammal biologist and bear specialist Thane Buchanan seems like one more happy perk she doesn’t deserve, but when she stumbles into a backcountry cabin and finds an elderly man unconscious on the floor, Mei Lin’s streak of good fortune begins to turn. There is a link between the man she’s falling in love with and the charismatic hermit who is determined to die on her -- a link she can’t ignore. The thought of deceiving the honest and straightforward Thane is unbearable. But what right does she have to untangle twenty years’ worth of another family’s lies? Plagued by unresolved demons of self-doubt, Mei Lin faces a critical, impossible decision... with potentially fatal consequences.
No matter the genre, USA-Today bestselling novelist and playwright Edie Claire strives to infuse all her writing with both warmth and humor. Her family-friendly Leigh Koslow cozy mystery series, a favorite of animal lovers that was originally published in 1999, was reborn in 2012 to become a Kindle Top-10 bestseller. Her romantic novels range from women’s fiction with romantic elements to a blend of romance and mystery, beginning with her traditionally published contemporaries, the award-winning Long Time Coming and Meant To Be, and continuing with her USA-Today bestselling Pacific Horizons series, whose characters follow the migration of the humpback whales to some of the most gorgeous locations on earth. In any Edie Claire work, the reader may be assured that while intrigue may beckon and tensions rise, love and happiness will always triumph in the end!
Edie has worked as a veterinarian, a childbirth educator, and a scientific/technical writer. A mother of three, she lives in Pennsylvania and aspires to become a snowbird.
This is the fourth book in the Pacific Horizons series, but you definitely don’t need to read them in order. This one centers around Mei Lin Sullivan (Ri’s sister, Maui Winds) and Thane Buchanan. Mei Lin is doubting herself and recovering in Alaska after assisting an elderly woman in her last days. Before she can move on, she takes on a new patient and gets inextricably involved in his life and his family’s quest for a Glacier Bear. The characters are engaging and the beauty of the setting shines through.
Lies & secrets. Decisions and mistakes. Love & family. When Mei-Lin visits Stanley they both have secrets and talk in their sleep. As they bond and share their stories a friendship occurs. Though this is a romance story between Thane & Mei-Lin I was more drawn to the friendship between her and Stanley. Great story!
I fall in love with EC's vivid worlds as much as I do her characters, every time! The plot was a bit predictable, but that didn't take a thing away from how much I enjoyed the story. Guaranteed an ultimately happy ending every time!
Loved the story and mystery. Highly recommend this series. I enjoyed all four books tremendously and how the couples from the other books are involved in the others.
I really liked this book and really like how its combined the characters with the rest of the stories. Thane and Mai Lin are perfectly made for each other but the story is not complete without some secrets.
