This is consistently the best of the Catalyst books. It's well-written with smart, engaging female characters and plenty of action. The art on this book is excellent as well. In this arc, our cast has learned too much and goes on the run from a rogue Homeland Security agent. I like that we are finally seeing some of the books finally crossover, at least with more than Lorena who is kind of the instigator for most of the Catalyst's lines existence.

Fast and Furious

This is Volume 3 of Chu's "Summit" series, but there's enough low key exposition upfront that you can step right into it even if you haven't read Volumes 1 and 2. And that's all to the good because this was a fun series to find and to hop into.

The deal is that our heroine, Dr. Valentine "Val" Resnick-Baker, is one of four astronauts who encountered a weird meteorite. She ended up with "enhanced" powers. The other three astronauts all suffered different consequences, which the reader will learn about in this volume. This time around, Val, her genius child ward Fiona, and her MIT research pal Joel Baker, are being chased by a rogue government figure who wants a macguffin that she thinks Val has.

So, Val is on the run, and Fiona and Joel keep getting captured and imprisoned in various black sites. Val, who has broken up with her girlfriend Kay, falls in with a mysterious black ops type, and the two go chasing about looking for the thingy they are suspected of having.

The whole thing is raucous fun. It isn't played for laughs, (although there is plenty of witty banter). But, the plot and action careen around without too much regard for staying on the rails. So you end up with a sci-fi action adventure tale that isn't terribly concerned with plausibility, but still likes to see stuff get blowed up.

I liked everything about this - good guys, bad guys, nutty guys, buddy humor, a little romance, alien artifacts, breathless pace, a trip to Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, (a funky real place that won a contest and got to be named after the TV show), and the occasional deadpan throwaway line. A very happy find.

I mentioned before that this series had all the elements to tell amazing stories. The potential was there, but Amy Chu, the writer, just needed to find the right story to tell. Well, with this third arc she did find it.
This time Val is in the run, the slate is wiped clean and it works much better as an introduction to the character than vol. 1 actually did.
It was really enjoyable and I hope this is the kind of stories we see for these characters from now on.
Highly recommended.

Volume three of Summit, from Lion Forge Comics, continues the excitement, energy and heart of this superhero series. Summit stars a Gay, Jewish, scientist named Valentina, who fights crime and starts to unravel the mysteries of the Catalyst Prime Universe.

This volume does an amazing job of being a fantastic jumping on point for new readers, while continuing the story from the last two volumes. In this volume, Valentina goes on the run, after learning too much. Now her loved ones, including her ex-husband/bestfriend and a sassy and smart little girl, are in danger and she must protect them, while trying to learn the truth about an almost earth ending event from years ago. Valentina ends up, throughout this volume, teaming up with another superhero, a new love interest and a bigoted, ex army veteran, to find away to get her powers back and save the ones she cares about most of all.

A wonderful thing about this series is the all female staff behind it. This series is written by the amazing Amy Chu, who is one of the best writers in the business. Amy adds a lot to this title, as she, similarly to Valentina, went to MIT. So that gives Amy an incredible insight for the main character. Amy puts passion into this title, making it an incredible story, with realistic characters. Also, Amy does a great job writing a realistic gay character and as a member of the LGBT+ community, this really means a lot to me. The artist on this volume, Marika Cresta, is a very skilled artist and she adds an stunning style to the series. Marika's art is full of personality and each character is very different from the other. Marika's fight scenes are action packed, and the scenes that require a touch of love, get that love, from her skills and passion. You can tell Amy, Marika and all the amazing people on this title (including a superb colorist, editor and letterer) really care about this title and put their all into this book. On a side note, the cover artist for this volume is also spectacular, her name is Roberta Ingranata, and she makes this volume popout and shine on the bookshelf.

I collect all of this title in single issues, but these volumes add so much to the series, with bonus content and great covers, that I end up getting both the trades and the single issues. If you're a fan on superheroes, comics, or kick butt female characters, I recommend this title. I will keep reading and loving Summit for as long as Lion Forge publishes it.
