The essays in this volume, states M. G. Cooke in his Introduction, afford as a group a concentrated view of modern black fiction. Other issues and subjects of investigation – an extensive view – may be pursued with the aid of the bibliography. So may the fiction itself, since a substantial list of novels, the counterpart and object of the criticism, receives its due prominence in the bibliography. For whatever reasons, some authors and some works are yet to rise to full stature; about others, the critics have yet to take a stand. One may venture to hope that a volume such as this will help both to further our understanding of well-canvassed reputations and to foster understanding of incipient ones. "Modern Black A Collection of Critical Essays" is an entry in the Twentieth Century Views series.
