I found this to be a very poor study guide. The first section of each chapter consisted of reading from the Bible and then answering a few simple questions which involved repeating the verse. For example, after reading 1 Chronicles chapter 11: "What is David called? (11:2)" The second section gave a little background - a very little background. The book claimed this section was suppose to explain what this passage meant. But again, there was very little information here, and very, very little background information, if any. For example, information in this section concerning 2 Chronicles 29-32 says, "But he also stresses that the inner attitude of the person who worships God is of greater importance." This is simply a paraphrase of 2 Chron 30:18-19. It was also one of the questions. In other words, we read it, we wrote it, and now we are being told it is an important point. Duh! I think I got it the first time. The final section for each chapter was supposed to relate scripture to life. The final question in the book is "How do God's love and God's law balance in your own life." While that is a question worth individual reflection, it is not a great class discussion question. These are difficult books in the Bible to read and confusing with kings of this kingdom and that kingdom, kings with similar names, repeated information. I would have found it helpful for a study guide to have a table of the kings, which kingdom they ruled, high and low points of their reigns, who were the prophets during their reigns. A time line would have been helpful. A comparison between the information in 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles would have been helpful. Unfortunately the class likes this author so we will probably continue to use his books as we march through the Old Testament.
