A Journey in Darkness: The Life and Music of a Man Called "IT"

Rate this book
This is the story of Tony “IT” Särkkä, one of the greatest metal musicians of all time, the evil genius behind some of the 90's best heavy metal bands. He was the creative force behind such acts as Vondur, Ophthalamia, Abruptum, and others. And then at the height of his creativity, he walked away from the scene. And then he came back to front one the most dynamic industrial bands of all 8thSin. Sadly, we lost Tony in 2017, but the music and the legacy he left behind will live on forever. Join me on this journey in darkness to explore the life and music of one of metal's greatest icons.

This is a short, brief, fan's biography of prodigious black metal musician Tony Särkkä. Beside detailed, discography-focused career notes that read rather like a long press release, there is tidbits on the Scandinavian black metal scene. This includes the unfortunate number of murders and suicides it produced. From this dark and dangerous community, the final act has Tony leave the music scene altogether for atypical globetrotting and personal exploration. I wish the book offered more on his experiences and activities there.

This was a pretty quick read but it added some new tunes to the playlist which I hadn't heard before. For that, I am grateful. I've been playing Ophthalamia's Dominion album on repeat since reading this.

Extremely short. Not much additional info than you can get online at various sources. Lacking a lot of info, particularly: how did he die?

I especially thought this line was a bit silly: "Not since Dimebag Darrell Abbott’s senseless death in 2004 has the metal world suffered such a tragic loss."

Would also be more interesting in learning where this passage about Jon Nödtveidt was sourced from - or some more information on these conclusions:

"He would be released in 2004 and resurrect Dissection, but he was not the same. He was unable to live with what he had done, even though he tried to be as “evil” as possible, he simply couldn’t cope with the fact that he had taken a human life for no reason at all."
