In 1879 the Outbreak brought the Forsaken onto the high plains of the Old West, twisted creatures of bone and leather mounted on demonic semblances of bison. By 1882 the great central grasslands of North America from the heart of Canada to central Mexico is the domain of the horrific buffalo riders; only outlaws, renegades, madmen, and a few fortified outposts of civilization remain. Six unsavory bounty hunters ride onto the edge of the grassland on the trail of wanted men, only to encounter an enigmatic scholar who claims to have a plan to uncover the truth about the Outbreak.
Buffalo Riders is a tale of an alternate Old West where a band drawn from the dregs of the frontier must face murderous nightmares made real, insanity given purpose, and the lust for power.
Buffalo Riders is the eighteenth work from the author of Sunstone and the popular Dream trilogy.
Born and raised in the icy wastelands of North Dakota, RW Krpoun joined the US Army, serving two enlistments before being honorably discharged at Fort Hood, Texas. Delighted to discover a land where snow was a novelty, he settled in Texas and took up a career in law enforcement, serving thirty years before retiring. His service included a Sheriff's Office and two Municipal police agencies, as well as two enlistments in the Texas National Guard as a Criminal Investigator.
RW lives on lakeside acreage with his lovely and amazingly tolerant wife Ann, and a band of ill-mannered animals who are all highly photogenic. His hobbies include reading, history, various forms of shooting, collecting battle-ready examples of medieval weaponry, and learning to use such weapons.
This is one of the best westerns I’ve ever read. The author’s ability to put the reader in our protagonists shoes is exemplary. The otherworldly twist is just eerie enough without making the story unbelievable. There is not a single loose end in the story, in a very positive way.
All the other characters are complete and we’ll painted. One can almost see and smell them (ew).
RW writes great characters: lean, yet complex, with honest emotions. The hero - this time Silas Greene - and his crew battle the forces of darkness in an alternate American west. The author's understanding and appreciation of firearms and their history is evident. Only drawback to the tale: no subsequent book to provide more adventures for a man I'd grown to appreciate. I would enjoy seeing Silas and his team in further adventures ala the Phantom Badgers or Grok.
This is my 4th RW book and it did not disappoint. Im not going to write an in depth analysis but I always want to know id people “enjoyed” reading a book. This one was fast paced with an interesting plot twist and flawed but lovable characters (and some hatable ones too). I highly recommend this book!
This was a page turner for me! Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite books and perhaps RW Krpoun's as well. Imagine Woodrow F. Call out on the trail, looking for ancient ruins and defending helpless greenhorns from gangs of bad men. Now add in some Zombie/demon/Eldar Beings and you will be there. If you like a bit of mystery and history this is your book.
Up there with Tim Powers for alternate history that feels insane and true at the same time. Just outstanding. This and The Sunstone are both highly worth reading.
This alt-Western/fantasy is a nonstop, action-packed thrill ride filled with memorable characters. There are some typos, but they don’t detract from this wild adventure. I’m hoping for more Buffalo Riders from the author!
