THE COPPER
DI Kane Barnett didn’t bank on three more cases landing on his desk—a death by bonfire, a murder, and a kidnap. He’s already got a huge case, damn it, bringing down Jez Pickins, the local drug dealer. The thing is, Kane meeting up with Jez’s girlfriend isn’t exactly a coincidence, and now he’s realizing just what a mess he’s in. With four cases on his hands, he’s strapped for time—and that time is running out.
Author of these series: • DI Tracy Collier • DI Carol Wren • DI Bethany Smith • DI Helena Stratton • The Cardigan Estate • DI Morgan Yeoman • Detective Anna James
Very good written. Very engaging. Well passed and with (un)expected twists.
British English, fortunately I knew what copper means *lol* The 1st book with this word I read - I needed to google it.
I liked the writing more than the story and the characters. I feel sorry for every single woman, who suffers abuse; and this heroine had her share on pain and humiliation. But she stayed with this dude for 16 years... He was dangerous and she was afraid, but still... 16 years... Probably the most likable character was the hero. But the situation with his partner, who killed himself… well, it didn’t sit well with me.
The book is semi-dark and slightly depressive. 2 murder-scenes on page, both women, one of them a young teenager. No real romance, MCs did have sex at the beginning, but it didn’t end in a fairytale.
Actually, the ending is what I liked the most. It saved the book for me. No sappy HEA, but a promise of a vengeance. Will be there a 2nd book???
This was a fabulous read from start to finish. Charlotte is trapped in a loveless relationship by a man who beats her regularly. Her neighbour dies in suspicious circumstances. DI Kane Barnett is on hand to investigate the crime and comes to the aid of one of the other neighbours in serious trouble. Barnett returns to the same neighbourhood when a teenage girl goes missing. Are the crimes connected? This book has many twists and turns and kept me turning the pages until the last page.
A great read from Emmy Ellis. I could not put this book down, I had to know what was happening! Great characters and a fantastic storyline, cleverly written with brilliant twists along the way. I would highly recommend this book.

This was an okay read. I was getting into the story but I didn't like the ending, one it felt rushed compared to the rest of the book and it just seemed to end. The characters were okay and i did not see the twist happening that was good and it got me. I feel like the story could have been stretched out abiot more to really entrape you.
This was a good opening book to a series, introducing DI Kane Barnett who was both likable and intelligent. I found Charlotte to be a tad grating but the ending was a surprise. I'll definitely read the next book in the series.
Wow loved this started it earlier in and have just finished it. You fall in love with the characters. Emmy writing style is ease to follow she keeps you on your toes all the through the twists and turns you don't see coming.
Good girl gone bad by Emmy Ellis. This was a very enjoyable read. I liked Charlotte's character and kane character. But jez was evil. I really didn't like him. This book kept me glued until the last page. 5*.
A fantastic read. DI Kane Barnett is up to his eyes with case loads and his partner in crime isn't making it any easier for him. Barnett is a man that does not do everything by the book, but only for the best intensions. The plot deepens as more incidents occure in the neighbourhood...could they be connected? Drugs, murder, a missing girl, a woman desperate to escape, it all adds up to a very twisty, fast paced thriller with a crescendo of tension right to the very last page. Highly recommended.
I read this book after reading the Tracy Collier books. DI Barnett is mentioned in one of the books briefly and this book is following on his journey. This kept me guessing until the very end, I do hope I get to read more about the characters in this book, realistic and likable most of them are.
2.5 ⭐️ it was going well until the last few chapters. It felt a bit all over the place and I wasn’t really feeling it - it wasn’t as satisfying as I would have hoped. I didn’t really feel much for Charlotte she was a bit bland, I did like Kane however and would consider trying another story with him in it.
What a superbly gritty tale! Emmy Ellis certainly knows how to keep her characters edgy & realistic, with a sting in the final chapter that left me reeling. The novel touches on society-changing events such as drugs, murder & abuse, making this a shocking drama but one that is relatable to many. As it’s the first DI Kane Barnett book in a series, I’m off now to purchase more.
Excellently written book that I steamed my way through in one sitting! Awesome storyline that remains unpredictable right to the end. Worthy of its 5 star rating
Stayed up all night reading this. Young girl, took up with a guy she loved. Found out he was not what he seemed to be. Murders and other things happen also.
I hate books that make me twitch at shadows and give me the creepy crawlies.
Oh, I mean I love books that give me those feelings because that's what they were written to do. Emmy Ellis succeeds nicely here.
I hate (ending type word here) endings.
Oh, I mean I love books that don't relay the ending halfway through the book. Happy? Unhappy? Who knows until you read the book.
I recommend you do just that now. I'd read a bit of Emmy's short work when we were in an online crit group. She gave me tons of very good suggestions and advice. Read the Creepy Ms. Ellis to tingle your spine and what's in that shadow over there>>>>>>>>
