After the Mage War devastates much of what is beautiful in the world, a young half elf finds himself on the road to Catlorian without any idea of how he arrived there, where he was going, or even who he is. Unbeknownst to him, he is about to face enemies who are bent on his death.
Sir Solothon Calendera, accompanied by Huntmaster Arantar Adenedhel and a spoiled young elf, is on a mission to Catlorian to find the one responsible for the deaths of friends and the source of the anger with which he has been cursed. Iaprene' Anolin is a Mage and cleric who is on a quest to find objects for an ancient foe. She is joined by another cleric, Melisande Dorn, whose rage is kept in check by her own caring nature. As the unlikely group of strangers comes together, they must defend each other and shed their demons to bond against a writhing evil and his minions. But can they unmask the Dark Master intent on destroying the world of Ta'el?
Catlorian I: The Savon'el follows a young amnesiac and his new friends as he searches for his past while battling against an unknown enemy.
I received a copy of R.L. Pool’s Catlorian I: The Savon’el to review. This is a new edition of the first book in the Catlorian series by publisher LifeRich. The plot is the same as the original edition by Dorrance but is edited and has many new details that help tie it in to the rest of the series, and it does flow better than the original edition. My favorit edition is the brief cameo of Lilith and Tisha who’ll appear later in the series. Even though their storyline begins in the next books they are so central to the overall series plot and characters, such an appearance feels right. Questions of good vs evil, how much history can and cannot know, and the balance between fate and free will feature strongly in the world of Ta-el. The new edition also features new cover art by the talented Katherine Lewis, who did the cover art of the rest of the series. The new art and slight title change fit in with the others in this fascinating series. You can feel the Savon’el’s anguish from the cover. The book itself is action packed with intriguing and complex characters in an epic fantasy suitable for the older end of the YA range to adult Epic Fantasy and Adventure fans. Mr. Pool’s narrative style easily allows for multiple “main characters” which the reader can follow, and connect with. The characters grow making them ore real and complex. The mix of new and classic fantasy and mythology elements create a perfect series for new and old fantasy fans alike. Even if you’ve read the original format, this one deserves as read. I recommend this book, and subsequent series for all Epic fantasy, Sword and Sorcery, Dark Fantasy, and Action and Adventure fans., as well as those just looking for a good read.
I purchased a copy of Catlorian: Savon'el on a whim during a Barnes and Noble's trip in January. We went to buy another book for a cousin, and R.L. Pool was there signing copies of this book. The story sounded interesting, so I bought one which Mr. Pool signed for me. I really enjoyed the book which is a mix of young adult, fantasy, and adventure. The story follows a group of adventurers from different backgrounds pulled together by fate and a common mission around a young half elf with no memory and against a great evil growing to threaten the land. As the story starts the reader meets the team separately, bouncing around between them until they join together and all story lines merge into a single story. The book utilizes different elements from fantasy and mythology making it relatable even to newer readers into these genres. I am glad I happened into Barnes and Noble that day as I found a lovely new series to follow. I'd recommend this book to fans of the genres mentioned above, and to those just starting out in the fantasy genre, or to anyone who just enjoys reading.
