Mel Bay Guide to American Fiddling Book/CD Set

Rate this book
Classical violinists can help keep alive the historic traditions of American fiddle music, but doing so requires a clear understanding of performance practice. A Guide to American Fiddling exposes serious students of the violin to the technical nuances of traditional Old Time fiddling. In this book, violinist/fiddler Andrew Carlson provides a detailed technical analysis of Missouri-style fiddling, focusing primarily on the use of the bow. Carlson further offers a comparison of classical and non-classical techniques, a brief history of American fiddling, plus 23 traditional tunes with authentic bowing indications. A CD recording of the tunes is included.

While not exactly a beginner's method, this book is a detailed coverage of the differences between classical violin playing and folk fiddling. The author has clearly studied these topics in great detail and provides the best explanations I have seen. This has the look of an academic thesis, but is quite readable and practical.

For anyone with some traditional music background or violin experience who wants to learn to play fiddle style, this would be an excellent starting place. Differences in rhythm, posture, and bowing are key to the American fiddle performance. An accompanying CD and many musical examples are provided.
