The harmony and consistency of John's Gospel can create the impression that the Fourth Gospel is relatively free of the problems and complexities which have tantalized scholars of the Synoptic tradition. But despite the impressions of a "seamless garment," there is a Johannine problem which comprises several different questions and has many changing faces. This volume analyses the three main areas of discussion relating to John's historical concerns, which include the problems of origins and context; theological ideas focusing on Jesus as Revealer; and the question of the Gospel's composition and style. The very diversity of the Johannine problem authorizes a number of different approaches. John Ashton has provided an excellent summary of the most important of these.

John Ashton, M.A., D.Litt. (1931-2016) was one of the foremost biblical scholars of his generation. He was a Fellow of Wolfson College and former lecturer in theology at Oxford University. He also taught in the Universities of London, St. Andrews, and Edinburgh. He authored numerous books and essays on religion and theology, writing extensively on the Gospel of John.
