In the Shadow of an Elephant explores the relationship between an orphaned elephant and a small African boy. It touches on poaching, friendship, loss, trust and life coming full circle.
This is a moving story of an African elephant who is separated from her mother, but rescued by a young boy, Jabari. He cares for her, and gradually they build a strong friendship. When many years later Jabari's father dies, Lualani the elephant cares for Jabari just as he once did for her. The language is spare, and the images are mostly realistic grey pencil sketches, with pops of colour and African patterns providing contrast and interest. This is a simple story, but one which is powerful emotionally.
Quietly fierce tale of love, loss and change that simultaneously tears your heart and cheers your spirit. Read my full review on this achingly beautiful book at: DIM'S re VIEWS soon. http://www.dimitypowell.com/dims-re-v...
This is a beautifully written story that demonstrates the bond between an animal and a human. The illustrations capture the emotions throughout the story beautifully. A great book to use and introduce loss and grief to a young person.
Emotionally affecting and touching, but I think it could have used additional information for grounding, like whether it is based on a specific elephant and human, or general information about supporting elephants.
