Love is risky, and in life, people take risks. Valerie Denise Porter takes a risk to love Eric Draymond Walker, an aspiring rapper, despite her sister and best friend's uncertainties about him. His looks had her mesmerized from the beginning. That risk eventually proves to not be worth taking. Valerie discovers that her life with Eric isn't what she thought it would be.
Like many women in toxic relationships, she feels trapped. She's living a nightmare, a live horror flick that she can't seem to escape from, until Isaac Mateo Ramirez makes her acquaintance. While she likes Isaac, Eric is the man she loves. Love should be reciprocated, but somehow, Valerie forgets what love is supposed to look like, sound like, and feel like.
Isaac wants to be the man to remind her of how amazing love can feel, but she can't seem to break free of Eric's grasp. Despicable decisions lead to unfortunate events, and Valerie finds herself at a crossroad. She knows what's right, but will she make the right decision, or will she stumble and fall in the horror flick of love?
Starting with poetry, writing has always been a constant in Monica's life. The interest began in her teenage years, being in love for the first time. Her love for writing has only progressed. Song lyrics and poetry led to short stories, then one day in her down time, a short story became a 56k word novel. It has been non-stop since then. Being a wife and mother, has only added to the joys of Monica's life. Attaining a BS in Sociology, helping her better understand people and their behaviors, has only helped her become a better writer, understanding characters and their complex personalities. Romance of all types has been her passion, and she plans to continue honing her skills in that genre.
Nicely done! This book brought me to tears for all that Val went through. But it also brought tears of joy when she finally got a chance to experience love. I would definitely recommend this book as well as read others that you write. Until next time!
There is really nothing more for me to say than I'm in awe of your work, Mrs. Walters. This book was so beautifully written. It had me looking into situations like these with a new perception. We never see the trauma or aftermath of what people have to deal with. I'm glad you gave incite on that. Bravo!
Realistic story on domestic violence as Val's love & fear of Eric took her down a dangerous road. Isaac was definitely a wonderful man & exhibited what true love entailed. His patience and caring nature was what she needed to make it through. Well written story
This was an amazing story! I hated Eric with so much passion!! It touched on domestic violence but gave us a so much more than that! Love, romance and it was also a little haunting and eerie!! Perfection!
Good book, had a tough story line of domestic violence but it showed what happens when someone loves you through the hard times . Val deserved happiness and Isaac was the one to give it to her !!
Having to defend yourself from the man you love could end up being deadly! Well, for Valerie Denise Porter and Eric Draymond Walker their four year relationship was filled with more domestic and verbal abuse than good times. Valerie is blinded by love and the idea that Eric was going to change. However, the changed never came. Eric’s basic southern boy rapper dream never launched off either.
Eric basically took out all his frustrations and rage on Valerie. The story line was intense during the beginning few chapters. Valerie then gets the hearts for Issac Meteo Ramirez. He’s a Spanish guy that she meets at her new job as at a bank. He’s easy on the eyes and is intrigued by Valerie’s beauty and presence.
I found myself rooting for Valerie to make it through the pain. The story line held my attention until almost 25% throughout the end.
After she accidentally kills Eric, she almost instantly becomes schizophrenia. I just couldn’t stick with the story line enough to not skim through it.
I’m happy that Valerie found love and herself again in the end.

This was my first book by this author and I wasn’t feeling it. I wasn’t attached to either of the characters although I felt sympathy for Valerie and happy she got her happy ending the story didn’t pull me in. A lot of parts were slow to me but it picked up at the end. I still would recommend this book
This book hurt my heart. The abuse that Valerie received from Eric was hard to read but it needed to be told. I’m glad that Valerie found her Prince Charming and got her happily ever after!
Love Like a Nightmare was a brilliant story and wrote beautifully!! The twists and turns surprised me and I didn't expect them at all! There are so many guys like Eric out here. This book is a reality that happens everyday for many women and I love how Monica Walters captured the seriousness of it! Isaac was such a delight for Valerie. I'm so glad she gave them a chance and he never gave up. I hope this story helps someone decide to choose themselves through it all! Absolutely great read and I recommend it to all readers!!
I’ve often been intrigued by the psychological effects of domestic violence on both sides of the abuse. Poor things...on one hand he/she loves you then the next they whooping your butt. It’s sooo easy to say just leave, and the abuses often ask why haven’t I left? This story was so touching because no one will ever understand the turmoil of domestic abuse...good job!!!!
This was not an easy read. The first half of it centers the brutal domestic abuse Valerie faces in her relationship and it all happens on the page and it’s hard to read. Emotionally as a reader, you go through all the questions of why is she staying when she’s the breadwinner but on another level, you see the emotions of someone who knows they deserve better but struggles to break free. I really found the first part emotionally challenging to get through and I can imagine it would be immensely triggering for anyone with a history of domestic abuse because poor Valerie goes through it in every form you can imagine and it is explicitly on the page.
The brutality of this book is kind of made less harsh once Isaac enters. He’s the perfect hero and perfectly understanding of Valerie and willing to stick it out and help her heal. I loved him for her and how patient and kind and loving he was as a character. There were a lot of twists and turns in this that were shocking and interesting. Valerie’s abuse, mental anguish and psychosis were difficult to witness but the support of her family and the “healing power of love™️” were beautiful and inspiring to see and made up for a lot of the pain in this book. I think it was a really good and very important story. If I had one hesitation, it would be that Valerie rushes from one very all-consuming relationship to another and I don’t think she quite gives herself the time to heal and regain her own power and agency. Also, if we didn’t know and love Isaac, some of his behaviour was on the pushy and stalker-y end of the spectrum… but we know him and loved him and his motivations, so it’s fine. Other than that I thought this was great and written with a lot of empathy for the judgement that women who remain in abusive relationships face. This is definitely one of my favourites from this author.
The author did a good job of showing many facets of domestic violence: Power and control of the abuser over the victim: Eric driving her car, him driving her to and from work or not, him having sex whenever he wanted with no regard for her, wanting her pregnant to tie her to him him knowing her salary/income her paying the bills, Isolation of the victim/abused/survivor: “Jekyll and Hyde” (instantaneous hot and cold switches in his personality) Valerie blaming herself as he conditioned her Valerie keeping the secret of abuse from others including police, doctors, employers or seeking an order of protection fearing his retaliation Valerie planning her escape Showing PTSD Showing were healthy love looks like
However, I expected more from Shati as a CPS worker she deals with domestic violence everyday. Sometimes showing the written word or exposing a victim of DV to other victims giving testimony can help a victim understand the cycle of violence and identify the patterns including Battered Women’s Syndrome.
It was refreshing that his family (siblings) stood with her
There was a lot of pills being pops. It have been interesting to see the signs of addiction flushed out. But the jail option was profound.
My goodness, I wanted to make a cameo appearance as the undercover auntie with a kick a$$ ask questions later additude🤬‼️ Each chapter of the book was difficult to witness Valerie being physically & emotionally abused. …please somebody rescue her‼️More so, I really wanted her to defend herself against the brutality of Eric (so he could relate to the pain & humiliation of domestic abuse he inflicted on her). Eric was a punk a$$ loser & waste of a sperm cell. I still want to get revenge on Val’s behalf 🤬‼️, “Love Like A Nightmare” was a good read considering the subject matter yet extremely stressful. Sadly, I can only imagine the constant torment & anxiety Valerie (and all victims) had to endure living with such a monster as Eric. Nevertheless, I’m grateful for her ray of sunshine in Mr. Isaac Mateo “Papi”Ramirez 😊. Her new life, new opportunities new man and yet his presence is a bittersweet HEA.
Love Like a Nightmare… Powerful, Painful, and Beautifully Told! 🥰
My, My, My!! What an emotional, frustrating, and tragic story—one that ultimately blooms into healing, love, and a trusting, beautiful relationship. 💜
While I haven’t personally experienced this kind of abuse, it’s become heartbreakingly common. Too often, people are quick to judge without ever knowing the full truth. This author reminds us why it’s not always easy to walk away and gives a deeply moving look at the pain, the fear, and the strength it takes to survive.
Everyone’s story is personal, unique, and worthy of understanding. The best thing we can do is be present—to love, support, and protect those who are hurting until they find the light again.
And when that healing finally leads to real love and happiness—first within themselves and then with another—that’s the most beautiful gift of all.
Excellent work, Monica, and thank you for telling this story. Kudos, Lady… Kudos!! 💜
Eric was the worst kind of man. He put all his failures on Valerie as if she was the one making the mixtapes and being denied. How we beat her over the smallest thing like asking a question was so hurtful. Valerie did not love her self enough to walk away from toxic behavior. Fear keeps us stuck in bad situations and when someone like Isaac comes along we give them a hard time because our minds won't allow us to believe that we are worth more than what we have been given. But, the way Isaac stepped in and saw her past all the hurt and pain and all he asked was for her to lean on him until she was ready for something more. 😢 😭 this had me in my feelings but I was so happy with the way it all worked out In The end. Beautiful story ❤️ you did it again!
Domestic violence is never a good situation for both parties involved but is most times camouflaged and thght of as love... Love is not Supposed to hurt... and being impressionable and young the 2 get mixed up. I was so over Eric when he was still trying to be a rap star. The way he took advantage of Valarie every chance he got really urked me. I was with Shati and Candy... in my Bernie Mac voice bust a move playboy... So glad Issac saw the natural beauty Valarie possessed and was able to prove to her that True Love Prevails... Glad to see a different style of writing from Monica. Although, some of her writings touch the subject but this one really portrayed a good view.. Good Read!
I'm glad Val got her happy ending, but is this realistic? She took so much abuse and then to have Isaac come in on his white horse and save her, so to speak, doesn't sit well with me. Ok, so she had a couple of therapy sessions and she was indeed right to have reservations about Isaac. But I feel like she needed more time to heal and find herself. She moved right in with her hero, finding love and marriage. Does this empower domestic abuse victims or give them false hope? It's good to know you can move on and be happy, but in a short time frame such as this, I believe it sends the wrong message.
This is a very informative and candid depiction about: one sided love, abuse, insecurity, courage, psychological counseling and complete love. These themes were told with thoughtfulness.
The first part of this story was difficult to read until the character, Valerie, was strong enough to move and stopped accepting the abuse. Unfortunately, circumstances happen and Eric committed suicide by his girl's self-protection.
Valerie was able experience able to mutual love and respect with Isaac, character. I enjoy this author's newer published works however, the older published before 2018 are very passionate and informative.
Valerie was living in a nightmare. Eric, the man who was supposed to love and protect her, lied, cheated and disrespected her to the nth degree! Worst of all, he physically abused her, doling out horrible beatings for any and every little thing he felt she’d done to warrant them. What happened to that sweet young man she’d known and loved four years ago? When she was at her lowest, she met Isaac, and even though she was drawn to him, her misguided loyalty kept her chained to the monster that was Eric. But sometimes fate has a way of unexpectedly stepping in and changing the game plan…
This was an emotional read, I cried more than I have in years. I would hope this book would give people insight it mental and verbal abuse. How easily this could happen and just how judgmental as a society we are without giving it much thought. Evil people exist and sometimes people lose their way. I hated feeling so emotional but it was a hard read it reality she showed the depth of Monica Walters ability to transport you to a place only a great writer can. I'd recommend this book to my sisters and friends because as much as we want to think it wrong happen to me, it can and it does to millions of people daily.
Not just your typical nightmare love story. More often than not, people fall quickly into another one after a painful relationship ends, lesson learned or not. And, more often than not, the new relationship doesn't last either. Truthfully, I spent the majority of Val and Isaac's relationship not trusting him for this very reason. Honestly, by the end of the story, I still didn't trust him though. But that's my interpretation 🤔🙃. But overall the story is a good read. It will definitely touch on a few of your emotions. Although the story may be triggering for some, it may be helpful to others...
I’m actually speechless and I really don’t know where to begin! Monica never ceases to amaze me! From the very first word of this book I was pulled in! I’ve never read a book that starts off as intense as this one did! Once I started reading I could not put this book down! My heart went out to Val.. it just seemed like she couldn’t catch a break! Reading this book there were times that I wanted to jump in and help her. Yea I know the story is fiction but man Monica made it feel so real! This is a story I highly recommend anyone in this situation read!
I don’t know… this was just off for me. I can’t pinpoint what exactly. The overall messaging was nice. But still the story read too surface from me. Like I was reading bullet points with some filler info in between. I didn’t get the chemistry between Isaac and Val. If anything I spent most of the story feeling bad for Val. She couldn’t catch a break and when she did, she still couldn’t.
Maybe it was an overload compared to the length of the story. I don’t know. This was just meh for me 🫤
Val was definitely a tough cookie to put up with Eric. They say love is blind but her wounds were definitely visible. I never understood how a man can say they love you but harm & mistreat you in the same breathe. I'm so glad that his sister came to her defense. Isaac was exactly what Val needed in her life. A real man willing to wait until she was ready but stood by her side the whole way through.
Wow, this story was so powerful and emotionally engaging. Issac and Valerie finding their forever was amazing to see. Their story progressed naturally it made sense and I was so impressed with her strength and vulnerability. There is a terrific plot twist that will definitely have your mouth hanging open. The story will capture you from page and hold you until THE END! Kudos to Ma. Walters for another amazing book🥰
This was a hard book to read…every time he hit Val, I flinched. Valerie had been through too much for such a young lady but her night in shining armor came and saved her from herself. Mateo, as she liked to call him, was just what she needed to believe in love again.
If abuse is a difficult subject for you, I do not recommend you read.
Monica…..you have done it again! I could not put it down.
This was a great, emotional read!!!…Survivors o DV truly don’t know their strength or the courage that is within them because all they see is weakness!!!…Asking why them or why they stayed so long!!!!…Never realizing they made it out and are the epitome of encouragement others need to leave as well!!!… I love Valarie and Isaac story!!!…A tortured soul on the path of a healing with the love of a wonderful man and beautiful friends!!!…
This book was truly amazing nothing about domestic violence is pretty and very seldom do the strong survive but I'm glad that love still found Val in the end and she truly had a great support system that many often lack in their times of need... Isaac was definitely a knight in shining armor
