This book was interesting but I was not satisfied by it. Let's start from the fact that it is not a biography, so for those who expected a complete treatise on the lives of Bulgakov and Mandel'stam, I'm sorry to disappoint you. On the contrary, it is a poor collection of testimonies from people who were near to the authors, like their wives, or their close friends or even excerpts from autobiographical texts. I didn't like this book so much, because it is not complete. It is not a biography, not an autobiography, not even a complete collection of written texts from people who knew the authors. It is a scarse bunch of texts taken from here and there, having in common the subject: the author, and some sources, like their wives. I found this book not enough to understand and know an author, and not even enough to start to know him. It is a collection of curious facts, I'd rather say. I gave two stars because I enjoyed reading Russian culture in English, my two greatest passions.
