‘’I dream of a world in flames: nuclear bombs falling on cities, consuming them like cancer; surviving in underground shelters, where we slowly turn into animals. These dreams are so lifelike. I’m afraid that one day I’m going to want to wake up, only to find it’s too late.’’
Tomáš is a young man in the prime of life. Though he appears to lack nothing, he is becoming increasingly depressed. At work things are going from bad to worse, and he gives up his vain efforts to revive his relationship with Eliška, his wife. As if that weren’t enough he is haunted by post-apocalyptical dreams of despair. His depressive state does not lift until he gets to know the eccentric therapist Kohl, who shows him how to be a better, happier person, but that is just the start of Tomáš’s story, which ends in a thrilling finale.
The Choice is the literary debut of young Czech author Jakub Trpiš, bringing together elements from spiritual literature, science fiction, crime stories, psychological thrillers and romances. The plot offers a strong message that can change the lives of individuals and indeed society as a whole.

Jakub differs from other authors, and so do his books. When writing, he changes positions, jumps genres and revisits different views of the world.
“The Choice changed my life,” Jakub says. “I truly believe that it can help people all around the world. Don’t let your failures stop you. Try to learn and grow from these failures. We all deserve to be happy, but the most important thing is to truly decide on this. I wrote The Choice to help people with this important decision.

Thank you very much again and with all my heart I wish you to be happy and hope that your dreams come true.
Dear readers, my name is Luboš and I would like to share with you my letter which I wrote to Jakub after reading his book “The Choise”. Of course, the original letter I wrote in Czech language. This is the shortened version translated by me into English.
Hi Jakub,
Just a moment ago, I have finished reading of your book Choice and I already know what the message for me in this book is. Some passages in the book when Tomas or Kristina while meditating found themselves suddenly elsewhere in another country, seeing some people suffering and feeling connection with their souls, reminded me of one Easter Darshan at Mother Meera in Germany when I fell in deep meditation founding myself in Lidice and Ležáky during the World War II. I was there present as real as your heroes were in their meditations. I was watching the Nazis killing all the inhabitants in these villages, seeing suffering of their victims, every detail of it. My mind was completely empty, I was feeling enormous heat in my chest and in my consciousness, which was not residing in my head at all, I was feeling deep sympathy. This sympathy/compassion (there are no right words for it) radiated from my chest as a loving hot energy. This energy did not distinguish, surrounded all equally, both the murdering Nazis and their victims. No trace of any judgment, it could not be, my ego and thoughts were completely shut off. Scenes were quickly changing as in an accelerated movie. I did not understand what it all meant at all, I do not know it today either – but your book has remined me of it again. I think that unconditional love was streaming through me to our collective consciousness healing that event in our co-created reality. And why did I get your book now? It should remind me that everybody matters, that I should not keep it for myself, that I should consciously radiate this energy into space, as your heroes did in your book. You know Jakub, I do not know why, but the group meditations organized by different people and groups to resolve various conflicts and situations in the world rather repel me, and I almost never participated in them. Well, so I was reassuring myself that at first, I have to save myself and the world later on, if ever, that I have no right to interfere with it. But after reading your book, I know it was a mistake. We are cells in one body, and when one cell gains access to curative energy, it cannot hold it just for itself. But it's just as you picture it in your book, it's just to consciously let this unconditional love and compassion flow through us without any particular intention. As you may remember, I said we were all in heavy hypnosis in this world. Perhaps this is the way to break it. Perhaps this is the way of how to break it. It was your book which made it clear to me. It had to be told in a story by a book to circumvent my mind and my personality which are under the hypnosis and programs. I will be doing it now, every day, at least just for a while. Well, you see, now I have got this idea: „The more energy you give, the more you get. And the liberating energy will be growing like a snowball rolling down from a slope and which will finally release in us this rigid hypnosis that will quickly fall off us as an heavy avalanche. Thank you very much, Jakub, you are an avatar. I do not say it as an expression of a respect or admiration, but as recognition of your mission.
"A book about what is important and what is not" After reading this book, you get a lot of insight into a lot of things and then it´s up to you wheter you understand them correctly or if you want to understand them at all.
The Book of Big Decisions on how to deal with your life and the lives of other people.
At first I was like: "Another psycho-thriller.". But then It hit me. The psychological/spiritual part of the book (especially at the beginning) is really amazing. Exactly in what I believe. Thank you Jakub for such a strong experience.
Difficult read, just doesn’t flow. Found it very jumpy and hard to keep up with the scene’s. I really did not enjoy this book at all. I did not find it at all life changing and honestly believe the only pages which make you ask your self a question were the last two.
The Choice is one of the most favourite book for me. It is a book you can´t stop reading. Whether you are at any stage of your life, the reading of this book will somehow helps you, gives you strength, a sense that you can do everything what you want. The topicality of this book is as if immortal, which is unbelievable. The book has a link inside of it, depth, and gives you an imaginary helping hand that is actually yours but the book will guide you to it. To tell the truth I cried during the first ten minutes of reading.
The atmosphere was great. The concept of two different experiences (or worlds) is unique. It goes deeper to psychological and spiritual aspects of human being. The Author evidently likes opportunity to describe not just deep emotions and feelings, but goes further into the essence of the true humanity and what is right. And he took it very seriously and succesfully wrote comprehending story about one man living his extraordinary life.
It's quite unusual for me to read a book that is set in the Czechia, nevertheless I enjoyed it. The story was interesting. I think it shows one really disturbing picture of our world that actually could happen one day. The only minus for me was the spirituality which I am not really fan of.
This book has deep meaning. With every line you dive deeper in the dystopic atmosphere whereas unlike in other dystopia in this book there is still hope for change. You will meet characters who will resonate with your heart and maybe find some light in the dark of today's world cataclysms.
This book is a quite fascinating mixture of genres – spiritual literature, sci-fi, romance and more. I especially appreciated that the protagonists are common people with whom one can easily identify. Choice is easy to read, and one can relax and contemplate life at the same time.
The Choice is very thought provoking piece, it teaches you a little something about yourself and the world we live in. It's a very good read with serious topics and some fun jokes and lightheartedness sprinkled in. I was very captivated by the story and the main protagonist, who I really identified with through his struggles and triumphs. I read theough the book very fast, because I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend it
So, I was bought this book as a birthday gift by my wife. She knows I love a dystopian narrative, however this book was a little different. I’m not as slow a reader as the above suggests, in fact I took a break as this isn’t an easy read, not the content, but the writing. As others on here have suggested, it may be the translation, but I comes across as being written by an excitable (and fairly literate) teenager. It makes for an uneven reading experience. As for the story, it’s a good premise and takes a few tonal shifts... I just can’t help thinking the idea has been wasted with the poor writing (OR translation.) Were this was a movie, it would be a made for TV ScyFy channel offering. If you want a better version of this book which is a far more satisfying read, pick up Douglas Coupland’s Girlfriend in a Coma.
I saw a big potential in the topic of the book but after reading it I wasn't satisfied. It's kind of shallow, naive and superficial. Nothing surprising and I really didn't enjoy strange mix of reality, dreams, "mysticism" etc. It didn't work for me, transitions weren't handled well. But maybe it was because I read the book in English, maybe if I read it in the original, it would felt better. Still a good attempt and maybe the author will refine and improve his style in the future.
A fundamental book for this difficult time, when people prefer pointing to others as a cause of personal and global troubles and forget that we are part of the greater whole and that we are more powerful than we thought. The book points out that everyone can choose whether to be dragged by life or firmly grasp it in their hands.
The story about a friendship, love, message and rescue of our Earth that will devour you. If you enjoy spiritual literature, energy, meditation, or you just like to read a little bit of science fiction or crime books and you are interested in how it might not have been with the world, definitely read The Choice. Readable, dazzling, instructive, with a great depth.
If I had to describe the book in one word it would be- LIGHT.
Well I didn’t really feel that this book lived up to the hype actually. I didn’t much enjoy it although as a healer for over 20 years I expected to enjoy it. Well maybe this says more about me than the book but overall I don’t think I would recommend it to anyone else. Looking at the other reviews I seem to be in a minority. Oh well. We are all on our own journey. I will look for some other inspirational writing to pop into my back-pack.
Uf. Postavy absolútne ploché a jednorozmerné.
I have this book 4 stars because initially it really drew me in with its unusual story it's concept of collective positivity and peaceful protests against the government & corruption. I found it poignant & apt in the current situation.
I heard such a lot about this book before I read it. Although it does make you think about things. It lost me so often. It would ramble on and on about things that after a while I would have to go over what I’d read to try and make sense of it.
This book is amazing and will affect you in a positive manner...it is uplifting and powerful and will change your thoughts , and consequently your life .
Quite an intense read but really enjoyed it. There were so many aspects that I could relate to everyday life. Also made me really see that life is what you make it
