Different than this author’s usual fare, EVASION: Do No Harm, is a 39 page short story by author, Susan Jean Ricci.

Altho’ occasionally she varies genres, Ricci is mostly known for romance novellas that are slightly naughty, wonderfully humorous and rich with absolutely fabulous characters. They are heartfelt, heartwarming and take readers to a wide variety of interesting locales where I always learn something new. All this is usually accomplished in about 100 pages and done extremely well.

In this shorty, we have a darker tale with only one character that gets much attention, Remi, an indigenous young woman from the Shoshone tribe. She’s married an American doctor, even tho’ her parents were not in favor of the union. What began as a wonderful marriage has morphed into a miserable coexistence. Marshall, her Dr. husband, has secrets that nearly cost Remi her life.

My actual rating for this truncated story is 3.5 because I found the conflict resolution to be rather preposterous and perhaps a bit insulting, were I indigenous. Still, the giftedness of the author is evident and for that reason and her considerable body of work, I chose to round up.

Written for mature/adult readers due to sexual content📚

A Mesmerizing Tale of Suspense.

Married to Dr. Marshall Wagner, Remi is in denial about the status of their relationship, looking at her life through rose colored glasses.

Sheltered by her family in the past, little does Remi know that she’s about to be embroiled in the most traumatizing situation she’s ever had to face. Her husband leads a double life, with a male nurse and lover, who’s blackmailing him with the secrets he’s discovered about his employer.

When Remi is kidnapped, her native American heritage gives her the strength to sustain herself through the brutal ordeal. But will she survive captivity and learn to love again?

There is a slightly supernatural element skillfully woven into Remi’s background, and strange twists and turns abound throughout the story.

An award-winning author of entertaining humorous romance, Susan Ricci writes a uniquely suspenseful, page-turning tale that you won’t want to put down until you’ve read through to the last page!

Remi Wagner has it all, a beautiful home, a handsome doctor husband, and the freedom to work in her gardens to her heart’s content. Okay, so maybe Marshall isn’t the most loving of men. Maybe he stopped showing her physical affection some time ago. A long time ago. But still, she feels she’s a lucky woman.

Her parents didn’t want her to marry Marshall, and maybe these devoted tribal folks had some kind of special intuition due to their Native American heritage. Remi learned a lot from them growing up, including how to live life honorably and with grace. But life with Marshall is getting harder and harder.

When things change, they go downhill fast, and terrible dark secrets are revealed, putting Remi’s life in imminent danger.

I don’t want to spoil this fun read by telling you about the “twist,” but it really surprised me. I found the story engrossing and hard to put down, and actually wished it had been a little longer because I really enjoyed the heroine. I hope Susan Jean Ricci writes more stories with this character!
